New D&D Figs: 45-60mm!!

You can say that again. Dammit, that really irks me. I do NOT want to have to buy 5 packs to get the one damn mini I want and have 600 damn goblins!
if this ends up being anything like Mage Knight or Heroclix, it won't be very long after the initial release before you'll be able to buy "singles" outside the booster packs for reasonable prices. especially "commons," which i imagine will be things like thugs, goblins, kobolds, and such.

for a Heroclix example, although a "unique" Nightcrawler fig generally goes on ebay for something like $35-40 by itself, i recently purchased a whole army of 15 "henchmen" figs for 99 cents...

[edit]looks like Merric already made this point... :)[/edit]

if you think a collectibles game will not fly because the "serious" D&D player will want only specific minis just take a moment to consider this. Have you seen a binder or box full of "Magic: The Gathering" cards at your FLGS? I have. The common cards sell for something like 15 cents a piece (guessing here, I don't actually play, I've only seen the sign on the box on ocassion when I check out.) Granted, a box of minis appears to be 8 for ten bucks whereas a pack of cards is probably around 10 cards for around 3 bucks so the minis will be a bit more, but specific common minis (some generic humans, orcs, goblins, elves, gnomes, dwarves, blah blah blah) will probably cost you like a buck a piece or maybe even less depending on the volume of minis a shop owner is willing to buy and keep around. I'm not just a huge fan of CCGs or TCGs or whatever they are called, but I do know that 50 cents to a buck for a prepainted mini sounds like a great deal to me. Bring it on.

Not all stores support that kind of trading because of the space it would require, and I don't blame them. If WotC doesn't offer a way to let me choose what I want to buy, I'm not going to support their new line. Too bad. I'm sure it might even be a fun game.

It would take less space than I think you realize. A fancy pants kind of establishment might bother to organize them into mini cases or glass counter displays (not any game store I've ever been to mind you) but how much room does a box take? Chuck the minis in and let the folks dig them out. I don't envision tidy rows of pretty minis in little shiny plastic cases like your dice come in, so I don't see space as a big issue. Also, keep in mind there are many online retailers out there that would love to cater to you. Check out ebay or some other auction site for really nice deals. It's really not a big deal to buy on ebay, I do it myself and I am no genius. If I can do it, anyone can. All you need is a paypal account which means all you need is a checking account or credit card. A lot of sellers accept personal checks or money orders. I think this could be great for the hobby. Loads of common type minis for low prices ready for play right from the get go. For those that hate painting, it's a huge benefit to snag a few commons and a rare/unique mini for a PC. And for those that like to paint, there are still other mini makers out there. For those that want to buy easy to use, cheap prepainted plastic minis rather than painting 25 orcs but want to still paint their special characters it works too.

Oh, one more thing. I know a lot of Mage Knight or Heroclix players that order them a case at a time. Go in with friends, split the cost and they can be group minis.

Well, After the initial coronary at seeing the 40mm to 65mm mistake, I have a couple thoughts on the new line.

First, I believe they are doing the right thing from a business standpoint. While I detest the crappy pre-painted, gooey vinyl miniatures that I've seen from MK and the like, it has been proven that most D&D gamers aren't miniatures enthusiasts, or at least don't have time to sit around blatting dabs of paint on a miniature for hours on end. This is the market that I think this new line will completely clean up in.

But they have to watch where they tread here.

See, I'm willing to pick up a pack, just to see what the hoo-haa will be about, however, any future sales to me, or like minded 'randomized' haters will depend on how Wizards views 'randomized'.

If they randomize by creature level, or creature power, than it will likely result in a nowhere near the sales they might hope (Hey, I'm probably wrong here, but its my opinion). Thus, if they were to say, make all Mind Flayers in the extreme end of rare, they lose my vote, because I know I'll never have a chance to actually buy a pack, and hope to get a Mind Flayer.

However, if they were to say have the basic creatures/classes as common, and work on making 'prestige' type races/classes, such as the assassin, or have a 'Mind Flayer Patriarch/Matriarch' as the extremely rare creature, with a different pose and perhaps some other coolness, I'd still be willing to give random a try.

I sort of like what I see with that 'Dragon' themed pack they intend to release. Themes can be good. Perhaps it means that it's most likely you *will* get dragonlance monsters, characters, Dragons and whatnot, but you just won't know *which* ones.

We'll have to see. I know for a fact that the quality will NOT be spectacular unless the hard plastics are used, though that is horribly expensive, and thus I'm betting these will be the bendy, awful, under detailed vinyls. I won't have a problem with them if I can figure out how to get the paint off of them. Since they will be mass produced, don't even think about these having great paint jobs.. I'd wager they will be the blobby, glossy mess that most MK figs are, however I've heard there are ways to get the paint off of them so they can be redone (Using.. Break fluid I think? I can't recall the exact method).

As long as Wizards keeps the pnp people in mind with this randomized stuff, then this could work out for people on both fronts. The only problem is that there is NO second market here in Edmonton, and buying across the border is out of the question for a lot of us, since our Canuckbucks are used more as toilet paper than they are as currency (Except the coins, which are used as ammo). Sadly, the store they have here is.. Well.. To be blunt, its bloody awful, and I'm not letting them gouge me when trying to pick up a second hand mind flayer single figure.

Hope this works out though. I know the folks at Wizards get a LOT of flak about this, and other things, so let me add in a 'Thank you' to them for at least giving the miniatures market another chance, and certainly for trying to accomodate both wargamers, and the pnp folks.

Maybe I'm not reading this right. Under the Miniatures Entry Pack, it states that the sizes range from 45-60mm. Could this just be a typo?

Yes, of course it's a typo. The wotcers are americans, after all, they meant 45-60 inches. The upside of this is, once your character is dead, you could still use its miniature to decorate your garden.

I have to say that for the price, the pics make those look very good. I already have hundreds of minis and these look like great alternatives to my special ones. Generally, I have a special mini for the game. I just need the en masse bad guy lot. Throw in some specials, and slap a good price on them, and come up with cool mass combat rules, I'm a buyer. Bout' time WotC!

I hope that's "lead" pronounced "leed", not "led", otherwise I think you're out of a job ;)

Seriously, though, thanks for popping in and straightening things out.

Cheers,
Liam
