WotC New D&D survey from WotC

That's a very interesting read.

2024 will be D&D's 50th anniversary. And 5e would be WOTC's longest running edition by then.

The temptation to want to cash in on such a marketing opportunity must be very high...

They would have to be very careful though. It would have to be a Chaosium CoC style "new Edition" Printing, or a 1e AD&D to 2eAD&D type shift with near 100% backward compatibility for the pitch to go down well.
Yeah, I definitely think 6e, whenever it ends up happening, will likely be fully or almost fully backwards compatible with 5e.
A lot of the "new edition" thinking might ride on how well the Movie and Tv initiatives do as well.
Very true!

Thanks for the heads up - I think I might just lie on this one, to see what the other questions are. :)
The age one doesn’t seem to be the only deciding factor in what questions you get, as several folks have reported answering over 40 and still getting several more questions, and/or getting the age question with a much higher percent completed.

Yeah, it wasn't for me either. I think the big "skip" comes if you tell it you've never played M:tG; I have, but a long time ago and am currently in process of unloading all my cards. A smaller "skip" - which I did hit - I think is triggered if you tell it you haven't played 5e D&D.

This is a werd question -- "Do you feel Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is on its way up and growing in strength, holding its ground and pretty consistent, or on its way down and losing momentum?"

Does it mean like market share? I assume they know better than we do.
Pretty sure I've seen that or similar on the last 2-3 surveys they gave, probably looking for trends. Not sure about the past ones but this one asked me about d&d in general as well as d&d 5e specifically. In the grand scheme of things it;'s probbly a statistically signifiant metric to watch for changes that can provide foresight towards problems

Maybe they're trying to gauge the public perception. A negative perception might be something that they'd want to change. A very strong public opinion might be something they could bank on to take a gamble on a book they aren't sure about.

The operative word there is "feel."

Sure they know. They know the reality (as best they can and better than anyone) but they want to know how their customers perceive the brands.

Edited typo to clarify what the heck I was saying
I had 52 questions. Question 51 was where I put in my age as 51. I got a kick out of that, but then I'm easily amused.

Yeah, the point really seems to be getting some information on how Magic and D&D fans overlap and relate to both games.
