They do...however, who do you think tries to do one or more of those more often than not? Players; specially those that want to be the best in the table and to win the game (aka video game mentality).
See, to me the point isn't the examples of poor player behavior they provide, but rather the axioms themselves that show the design ethos they espouse.

I think that by harping on examples from three or so editions past and going so hard on nothing but fun without talking about the GM's needs to weigh the big picture even when the result might not be immediately desirable for players that paragraph being argued about invites players to clobber the gm with the tyranny of fun.

Using rules lawyerable examples from 5e's rules wording rather than something like the 3.x peasant railgun might have given those examples a bit more punch in the 5e DMG though
I've seen people try to argue for the peasant railgun in 5E, using readied actions. It's still a current example.

There's a big difference between jokingly talking about pigs flying and when an edition's rules were explicit about the steps involved in setting up those flying pigs. The phb provides so many more relevant rules for players to rules lawyer over that GM's might feel the need to get override the RAW In ways that players can claim fun until they realize that being like Mister Valentine from the Twilight zone is not as fun as it seemed and blame the gm for not building better encounters that were more "fun".
