new drow campaign

I'll soon be playing in a drow campaign.
I have my heart set on playing a wizard, however there will only be 2 of us and the other will probably be a rogue, so I was thinking that perhaps i should pick up some fighter levels as well. However, i don't want to give up to much of the wizard aspect of my character. so i'm not sure when i should take fighter levels or even how many levels i should take... i'm not even going to start looking at prestige classes yet..

on another note can drow be arcane archers? the requirement is race: elf, do drow count? and why do drow generally seem to use crossbows more than bows? is it just an attempt to seperate themselves from thier surface world cousins? or is there a practical reason behind it?

a couple fighter levels, I'd say at most four (weapon specialization).

and look at the bladesinger, the spellsword, and various other prestige classes, because they're a good thing for a wizard/fighter to work to.

Yes, drow count as elves.

the crossbows, I'd say that they have the practical reason of being easier to conceal, pre poison, and all around unhonorably kill people, which kinda goes with the drow evilness:D

Drow can become Arcane Archers. As for crossbows, I guess they see crossbows working a little easier underground than a bow. Depending on how many levels this game is going to go, Go 4 levels of fighter the rest Wizard. You can specialize and get some decent feats. Except no fireball till 9th level :(

He doesn't have to take them at first, since his favored class is wizard (unless he's playing a her, because female drow have cleric as their fc).

Generally Drow can take elven PrC's. But the DM might still say no. (Especially in the case of the Bladesinger. I'd need much and good convincing before allowing a drow to become a bladesinger.)

Drow Bladesingers would kick some major butt. I was making a troupe of them for my game. Dark Elves doing the twist to Lolth music.

Hm... Lolth would not be the right deity: Bladesingers wield great cultural power, and lolth doesn't grant that to any male. And females aren't supposed to study the arcane arts, but become priestesses. Also, Bladesingers are Corellon's favorites, and that makes them subject to Lolth's special hate.

I could envision Bladesingers as elite guards for Vhaeraun (the few ones that aren't assassins, rogues or arcane tricksers - or darkmasks).
Selvatarm could have something approaching bladesingers, but he has to few of an own opinion and borrows Lolth's instead, so he'll hate'm, too.
