I don't think that it is a bad idea. Certainly not gonna make someone ultrapowerful when they blow a feat on it. I would say that each cantrip is castable once per day like the gnomes though. That'll stop your human fighter from casting detect magic 4 times a day.

I agree, great feat.

Although I wish there were a better name for it...

Minor Arcana?

Hmm...

Aprentice Wizard?

Damn, it's hard to name. :)

Great feat!!! :D Arcane Dabbler is a fine name as well.

This feat is much better than similar ones I've seen in the FRCS and fan sites. The FRCS one doesn't even let you choose which cantrips you get, which seems pretty lame to me.

But it still shoud be only taken at 1st level like the FR one.

I don't see why. I think anyone could learn this feat unless the game they are in has a specific magic=inborn ability feature. This makes me think of a person learning a few spells to work with. It doesn't seem like a huge deal.

I don't think so either. However, there should be a fair amount of training involved here. It should cost something to get this. Either a small fee to a mentoring mage (500 gp?) and/or amount of time to learn these (2 months?).

Just a suggestion. THese are campaign specific, play with them how you will.

The feat is good, and seems not overpowered, though... Perhaps are 2 free Class Skills not appropriate...

Here is another suggestion:

Arcane Dabbling / Templar Training
Prerequisite: none (or some Background Information)
Description: You have undergone a certain training in arcane or divine spellcasting, though you never went deep enough to understand all the concepts or learn to really cast the more powerful spells.
Benefit:
You can cast 3 cantrips or 3 orisions with an effective caster level 1, using your Intelligence (cantrips) or your Wisdom Score (orision) as Spellcaster ability score. You can cast each once per day.
Additionally, you gain +2 on some Spellcraft & Deciper Script Checks, and a +2 bonus on knowledge(arcana) for arcane dabbling or knowledge (religion) for Templar Training
When you choose arcane dabbling, you gain the bonus to Spellcraft & Deciper Script when you use the skill on arcane spells & scrolls, if you choose Templar Training you gain the bonus on using the skills on divine spells & scrolls.
If you chose to take a spell caster class using spells of the chosen type, you are considerd having spell mastery in them (arcane dabbling and wizards), or know the spell additionaly to other cantrips you know (arcane dabbling and sorcerer or bards) or be able to spontaneously cast the spells (Templar Training with Clerics, Druids, Paladins and Rangers), but you cannot add the spell to your normal amount of spells per day.
You still keep the bonus to the skills.
