New Feat, Balances Proficiency: Bastard Sword

I don't have my books with me so I can't compare this with other feats, power or flavour wise. Gives less bonus than a shield would but if you are aiming for high defenses you wouldn't be going the two-handed route...

Any suggestions for developing ideas to tackle the problem in this direction?

(This is my first post here, hope it isn't a total waste of space :) )

Well, first of all, welcome to the boards...

I like your angle, and I think it might work... let me just offer some editing polish here:

Two Handed Defense
Prerequisites: Str 13, Dex 13
Benefit: When using a two-handed weapon you gain a +1 shield bonus to AC. At 11th level, this bonus increases to +2. At 21st level, it increases to +3. At 21st level you also gain a +1 shield bonus to reflex defense.

Leave the bastard sword in, make the greatsword a superior weapon that's +2d6. I mean, rapiers and bastard swords can be superior, why not greatswords? They're kinda wacky to use frankly.
That's what I was going for with the feat that allows you to increment your damage by one step when wielding a two handed weapon. The end result would be that characters could use a greatsword as a 1d10 weapon, or spend a feat to use it as a 2d6 weapon. But I guess I'd have to check the die increment chart to see if there's any wackiness in there.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the best outcome is probably to just kill off the bastard sword. Which is disappointing to me, but its probably for the best.

you guy's are all touched in the head.
first you have to spend a feat just to use a bastard sword and all you get is: +1 to hit over the battle ax, or teh flail, or the warhammer. teh weapon has the same stats as these other weapons. a feat. for +1. yay.
if you guys want to make each fighting style 'unique' with their own flair, then have at it, but the bastard sword has nothing that cant be gotten with other weapons. to tell you the truth, i was disapointed that 'special' weapons didn't get more for spending that feat.

ajaxtorbin- that's kind of the wrong comparison. Look at the bastard sword. It does 1d10 damage, and you can use a heavy shield. So you get a 1d10 weapon, +2 ac, and +2 reflex defense.

Lets say you want to use a greatsword instead. You get the same 1d10 weapon, but you don't get +2 ac and +2 reflex. You have saved a feat, but what could you possibly use that feat for that is as good as +2 ac and +2 reflex? Nothing, really.

That's the problem. It makes two handed weapons kind of lame.
