New Incantatrix Questions

Falling Icicle

Adventurer
Right now I'm playing a Wizard/Incantatrix. I've heard that this class has changed in the new Players Guide to Faerun book. I have the book preordered, but have been told not to expect it for two to three more weeks! :(

I've already been told about some of the changes, but I'd like to hear more! I especially need to know if any of the requirements for the class have changed so that I can adjust my character accordingly. I'd also appreciate any opinions on the class and its changes. It seems to be a really cool class for Sorcerers now. But how good is it for Wizards? What schools do u have to give up to be it? Is it like the Red Wizard where you keep the forbidden spells you already know? Can you still use the forbidden spells from items? Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I believe the only change in requirements is that you cannot have a restricted school of magic.

Personally I like the class alot better now, it has a definate theme unifying it. Just be sure to pump up Spellcraft so that you can add metamagic feats to other peoples spells and spells in effect. Wands become really useful too since you can metamagic them on the fly. Quickened wands!

Are there any specific changes you were wanting to know about?

Odd. The local gaming store had over a half-dozen of them on the shelf a couple days ago ...

Sure:

SKILLS: Concentration 4 ranks, Knowledge (Arcana) 8 ranks, Spellcraft 8 ranks
FEATS: Iron will, any one metamagic feat
SPELLCASTING: able to cast 3d-level arcane spells
SPECIAL: cannot have Abjuration as a prohibited school.

You have to give up any one school (other than abjuration, divination, or an already-prohibited school). It works in all ways as a Wizard's Prohibited Schools do. (Side note: Red Wizard/Incantatrix sucks ... FIVE prohibited schools, eek!).

Overall, the class is very much "I am the god of metamagic"-themed. Bonus metafeats at 1/4/7/10, able to add metamagic to their spells on teh fly, able to add metamagic to allies' spells on the fly, and able to add metamagics to spell-trigger effects on the fly, and at 10th level, they still get Improved Metamagic - that's some nice stuff, there!

Also, the incantatrix is able to take over spell effects from others - even if the "other" in question doesn't WANT to give the spell up! Nice, indeed!

The new Incantatrix is now better suited as a Sorcerer class than before, esepecially because the requirements have been toned down, but I think that Wizards still benefit a bit more from it (all the instant metamagic stuff is rather nice for Wizards, that cannot do that normally).

This is indeed interesting. Our party is nearing Epic, and I was looking at options for my Mnk1/Wiz5/Elem Savant10/Archmage5 (when he'll be 21st),
and starting Incantatrix at 22nd makes those juicy Epic metamagic feats bonus feats is really something to look at.

Continuing as Wizard is a waste (since I can't get Epic Wizard), and the other option is Epic Elemental Savant (from the Transformational Classes article in Epic Insights on WoTC's site), but Incantatrix may prove more useful.

Don't you have to get bonus feats from an epic class to choose epic feats (besides the standard 1 per 3 lvl feat)?

That is, if you pick a standard class with your epic levels, your bonus feats from that class are limited to non-epic feats.

At least that's how I believe it works.

Unless you go by the rules in the ELH of course. :D

IDHTBWM, but I bet Pax could point you to the rule (he's done it for me and many others). I don't use the rule in my home campaign, because it makes many classes unbalanced when they start at epic levels (i.e. fighter and Incantatrix).

Knowledge (The Planes) was dropped, and you can't have abjuration restricted... (Before I believe it was both abjuration and transmutation that were protected).

It works nicely as an epic PrC though, that is true, due to how high the Spellcraft check for the applying metamagic to ongoing effects can get :). (DC 18 + 3 * AdjustedSpellLevel).

I'd like to see that rule... why wouldn't a Cleric go into Hierophant after 20 levels, and take 5 feats for 5 levels instead of 1?

Or just launch into Fighter and get bonus feats (3 - 1st, 2nd, 4th) faster then an EPIC Fighter (2 - 22nd, 24th).

Maybe there is a wording loophole... but intent is out of the question. YMMV.
