D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

OK, so the false equivalency distracted me. What is your point?
Did you go back and read the original posts by Oofta and then myself (and the subsequent responses?) I'd like to think my point was made fairly clear-- so long as no one gets distracted by the introduction of the "racism" angle of the Orc by someone else outside the conversation... rather than understanding the example in relation to all the previous posts.

That tends to happen a lot around here. Someone makes a point and uses an example... and then someone shows up to argue the example as not being correct, rather than argue the point in the first place.

A HUGE reason not to bother with D&DB whatsoever.
To be clear, that restriction only applied to D&D Adventurers League play, not D&D Beyond. That said...

As far as Beyond goes, you can still use Volo's Guide and Tome of Foe PC and Monster block options that were previously abrogated Monsters of the Multiverse, in what I always presumed was a test run for 2014 options once the new book is out.
You can if you already purchased access to those options before they became Legacy Content; if you hadn't, they're just unavailable in DDB now. I assume something similar will be in effect when the 2014 core rulebooks become Legacy Content.

In a TTRPG, nothing is mandatory. Systems wise, it will still work, and Crawford admitted that in the videos (did you watch the videos, they are quite clear?).

With Beyond I guess they're going to delete the option for people to buy the 2014 PHB, just like they deleted the option to buy Volo's or the like, which is er... not great, given that they appeared to indicate the opposite of this previously. They should be telling people to buy the 2014 PHB now if they want it, if it's going to be deleted as an option in September, because a lot of people will be doing holidays and so on, and may well not even see this until it's too late if they take the Volo's approach.

Ok, so it's not backwards-compatible and the specific claims that WotC repeatedly made that you could use 2014 versions of things with the 2024 versions are just giant lies? This is fairly big news being played off as something minor. I mean that's huge. That's a real incentive not to buy 2024, frankly, if you're forced to use the 2024 rules (which Beyond presumably would literally force you to use). It also directly contradicts WotC's story on 2024 up to this point, which was that it was all optional and designed to be better so you'd rather to use it, rather than being an "errata" or "mandatory".
They've been quite clear for a while that you can run a 2014 character fully built with 2014 rules next to a 2024 character. The only news here is that in addition to that, you can use any 2014 option with a 2024 built character that hasn't been updated by the 2024 rules. So explicitly you can use a necromancer 2014 subclass with a 2024 built character, etc. It's actually more backward compatable than had been previously explained.

I guess that's...technically...optional?

Yeah, I donexpect they will sell the older rules on Beyond in the future, to avoid co fusion for newer players.

Sure, and let's hope that remains true because it sounds a bit like backpedalling has begun on that. As for the latter no, that's not "more backwards compatible" - that had always been stated. In fact it was a major issue during the UA when they were messing the levels of subclasses around as to whether it would work with old subclasses. So that's definitely not "more backwards compatible". I guess you forgot?

That's going to be real bad for some people given they haven't warned anyone, I expect to see a bit of backlash, a big one if they give less than a week or so's warning. I mean, we're really already past the point where you should warn people about something going off the shelves permanently.

It would mean some subclasses were gone entirely as a possible thing to have on Beyond until they get republished in a post-2024 book too - a bunch of Wizard and Cleric ones particularly - because they're in the PHB, but not the new PHB (most other classes only got extra).
