New JH NameGen Installer!

Maraxle

First Post
On my site, www.jhanson.com, you will find that I have changed the JH NameGen FULL install so that it uses a new installer. For all of you who have been having trouble with the old installer, this should fix the problem. Please give it a shot and let me know. Unfortunately, most of the failed installs have been on a Windows ME system, and I do not have Windows ME to test it with.

Let me know on this thread if you encounter any issues. Thanks for your patience!

Hi Maraxle,
Still a bit of a problem. At the very end of the install, an error message pops up saying: "There are no rules found in C:\My Documents\Name Generator\Rules\. Please create at least one rule in this folder, or change the path on the options screen." An empty box then pops up (which I'm assuming is the gui). Let me know if I can be of any further help. Ohhh - I'm running Windows ME . . .Thanks.

If you browse to the rules folder, is there anything there? If you look in the c:\my documents\name generator\ folder, are there files there called Dwarven Names.rul, Elven Names.rul, etc?

Also, is that the location to which you installed the program this time, or is that a remnant of the previous attempt?

It may very well have been a remnant of a previous attempt. So, this I decided to uninstall/delete out everything; reboot and start from scratch. The problem is, unless I'm totally messed up, when I go to your website to download, I think the version with the old installer is back up. Thus I can't check. Sorry to keep bothering you on this and thanks for your patience. Peace

Thanks. I found it and tried to do a "clean" install. However, I still got the same error message (although this time it did go to the Program Files Folder). When I look in the folder, there is in fact a subfolder entitled "Rules" and within this folder there are the dwarven; elven; human; magic; orc and tavern rules files. I'm not sure what is going on here as the install itself looked like it goes flawless (no error messages or crashes). It is when I click on the desktop icon I get the message about rules not found and the empty box pops up. :( Also, fyi - I disabled my virus protection prior to install (if that matters). Anyway, let me know if I can be any further help!

If you haven't uninstalled yet, try going to Tools->Options... You should see a place where you can set the rules folder. Choose the Rules folder that you have verified actually contains the *.rul file. Double click on it, and then click OK.

I'm afraid that for whatever reason, it is picking up the registry entry for the older install. This will sync the registry entry with the new install.

EDIT: I have just now uploaded a new version of the installer that rewrites the registry keys to fix any broken installations. It's at www.jhanson.com/files/JHNameGen-setup.exe

Hey Maraxle,
SUCESS!! :D Finally, I loaded your version which overwrites the Registry Entries and it works!! Thanks for working with me on this. It is a nifty little program that will get a lot of work from me. I was easily able to download the new pack with the additional names. Thanks again. This thing is nifty!

Excellent! Thank you for your help and your patience. :)

The install is available for download for everyone, just by selecting Full Installation.
