D&D 5E New Metamagic: Animate Spell

Tales and Chronicles

This is a fun new idea I had while reading yet another unbalanced 5e conversion of PF summoner and yet another sorcerer without any theme other than ''you summon stuff'' (which is an origin, I guess?) on Reddit.

In E:RftLW, we have a template to create living spells, so I thought: why not give the sorcerer the metamagic to animate any of its spell, so that any sorcerer from any origin could be a pet class should he want to?

Metamagic:
Animate Spell. By spending an action focusing on one of your spell of 1st, 3rd or 5th level that deal damage, you can spend a number of sorcery point equal to 2 (or 3?) times the spell level and spend the spell slot to infuse life into your manifested magic. You summon a Living Spell with the appropriate statistic as per the Living Spell Customization table (E:RftLW p299) for 1 hour. In combat the living spell use your own spell DC and shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. The only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take one of the actions in its stat block or to take the Dash, Disengage, Help, or Hide action.

any thoughts?

Interesting idea. I have a PDF on dmsguild with unusual living spells.....It has a conjure living spells spell, which is the same as conjure elemental. But I do like your idea, and will probably add it to the document, if that is ok with you. It desperately needs some layout/editing work anyway....what I like is that you are opening up the spells to not just combat......there are some creative things you can do with a living spell that isn't just about combat.

I'd go with 2 times the level. .....I'd also write your description to closely match the wording on conjure elemental, or a similar spell.

That would be a good way of doing it. My own take is inspired by the UA: wildfire druid, which spend wilshape to summon its pet for 1 hour so its less a summon spell than a modular pet feature in that specific case.

Right now only the Divine Soul Sorcerer is any good at Conjuration. They can cast Planar Ally instant permanant "Pet", but you have to pay it in Gold and XP, so its not cheap. They can also cast Conjure Celestial and Temple of the Gods later.

Seems good to me; it hits the "you are doing something different with magic" button really well. You could add spells that inflict a condition for 3 times the spell level.

Now I am picturing a paladin/sorcerer multiclass with his best friend, Living Searing Smite (always good to keep a spare weapon if you try this).

If they ever retroactively add bonus spells to the PHB sorcerers, I hope the wild magic one gets the demon summoning spells (what's wilder than that? And conjure fey is too high for bonus spells). Alternatively, any future demon bloodline sorcerer could have a "spend 6 sp's and summon a demon" subclass power.

The sorcerous origin I wrote for Eberron has you become a living spell as its capstone....

There should be a sorcerous origin of demonic, and you should become a demon at 18th level.....good idea to say there should be one!
