New minis preview: Trolls regenerate differently

That troll ability is for the minis game, not 4E. Now, it may work that way in 4E also, but that reference was definitely a mini's reference.

If you look at the troll's card for the miniature game you'll note that he has a single check box next to his feral regeneration ability, which I believe means he can only use it once. I suspect that this is all a miniatures thing too.

His feral surge ability is interesting as well.

I like the troll idea. With immediate Fast Heal of 20, it will be hard (but not impossible) to kill with real damage. Fire is no longer required, but with double damage it certainly helps.

I hope we see more of this kind of thinking in 4e. A true options, not restrictions.

True. There aren't a lot of at will abilities in the mini game though. Dragon Breath is usually capped at one use, for example. The RPG Troll probably has a similar ability, but I doubt it'll be limited to once per encounter.

The Harpy is interesting as well. The Sonic blast ups it's versatility quite a bit, and it's by no means a weak attack...15 dam in the Mini game tracks to at least 4d6 damage in the RPG. Lure is very interesting if it's close to the RPG effect.

Also, while the harpy is listed with a very low AC, it's not an incapable hitter. Tracking stats from mini game to RPG is always a tough thing, because it depends a lot on the critter. Sometimes the stats are very similar between the two, and sometimes you get something like the Blood Ghost Beserker with almost zero resemblance between the two sets of stats.

The Blackwoods Dryad is sort of interesting. That's the "natural form" eh? Aside from the nice entangling effect it's not very interesting mechanically though. The RPG version is hopefully a bit more versatile.

The Troll's Regeneration is likely a "per Encounter" Ability since the Mini can use it only once in a battle.

So it can regenerate a third of his hit-points at once but only once per Combat and every 5 minutes in non-combat. Sounds like much easier to remember than the 5 hit points regeneration, while retaining the same basic idea.

Besides you don't have to care anymore if the attack deals non-leathal damage (non-fire) or real one.

I didn't get any impression like that. I thought the gradual petrification thing meant that the attack has to be used multiple times to fully statue-ize someone.

Even if this is true, which was not the impression I got, it's still a runnning tally mechanic. My impression was that the petrification ability slowly increased in each round once you were hit.
