D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

There's a brand new playtest document for the new (version/edition/update) of Dungeons of Dragons available for download! This one is an enormous 77 pages and includes classes, spells, feats, and weapons.

In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents updated rules on seven classes: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, and Rogue. This document also presents multiple subclasses for each of those classes, new Spells, revisions to existing Spells and Spell Lists, and several revised Feats. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest document.

Some of these changes seem pretty good--but I just got to Paladin, and now I'm seeing that they're making Channel Divinity class-siloed. Meaning, Paladins have Paladin charges for Paladin-only uses, Clerics have Cleric charges for Cleric-only uses...

Why in God's name are we continuing to call them "Channel Divinity" if they're completely unrelated features?
So a magic item can grant you a refresh or use an expenditure of a channel divinity feature without naming which channel divinity?

They did try that in the Next playtest and they found people didn’t like trading damage for effects. My guess is that since the rogue had a pool of extra damage to pull from it made more sense? We will see. I like it and could see it as a means to make a cool nonmagical Ranger and an updated fighter (not that they will do either of those).
Frankly I'd offer the option on crits for everyone....more damage or impose conditions or something.....

I am amazed at how they completely missed everything with this Monk. Everyone gets weapon mastery, so Monk's unarmed not having it makes them just worse off.

The defining feature of Monks is having such terrible issues with Ki through their early levels, that they fix it... after the early levels. And all the new names for abilities are just worse! And the elemental monk can do a whopping 3d8 AoE at lv6+? Uh...

1 minute short rest is great! It's just... that's it. You're still there just to fish for Stunning Strike, only once per turn now.

Taking down Stunning Strike was necessary to make the class feel better, but filling out the class with minor buffs or sidegrades isn't a very good trade.
Doesn't seem like they just filled it out with minor buffs. I am going to take a few more passes at it but overall this feels like a buffed class rather than a nerfed one so far to me.

I am still confused why they insist on giving monk a d8 HD. It's a martial class - given them a d10 already.

Funny. I expected the monk to get a radical overhaul and rogue (which seemed fine as is) to change very little. Instead monk hasn't been changed that much and rogue gets a shocking new suite of abilities.

Not that I'm complaining about rogue. Cunning Strike is the fix I didn't know I needed. Makes the 5e rogue into something very similar to the 4e version without going outside of 5e mechanics/design. Love love love it.

Not sure if monk has been fixed or not. 5e fans can't agree on whether or not fire is hot, but there's near unanimous consensus that Stunning Strike is too good and almost everything else about the monk is a bit weak. So I'm surprised that Stunning Strike has been barely nerfed and the rest of monk is kind of the same. At least elemental monks got the big overhaul they badly needed.

Paladin's Smite is an awful, awful name, but I like the implementation. Finally a use for the Smite spells! ...just kidding, it's still just Divine Smite.

Healing with a bonus action doubles their hitpoint pool, which would be silly on its own, but now imagine just how many times they can pop up an unconscious party member.
