D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

There's a brand new playtest document for the new (version/edition/update) of Dungeons of Dragons available for download! This one is an enormous 77 pages and includes classes, spells, feats, and weapons.

In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents updated rules on seven classes: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, and Rogue. This document also presents multiple subclasses for each of those classes, new Spells, revisions to existing Spells and Spell Lists, and several revised Feats. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest document.

Random idea I may or may not like:

counterspell works against any Magic Action
Also, big fan of "magic action" being a thing. I did that in one or two PDFs I sell (one of which was ripped by a reviewer for using a non-standard spell block, even though the description online clearly indicates that)

This is how martial abilities should work, though. A trade-off you make in the moment, rather than a resource that refreshes on a rest.
They did try that in the Next playtest and they found people didn’t like trading damage for effects. My guess is that since the rogue had a pool of extra damage to pull from it made more sense? We will see. I like it and could see it as a means to make a cool nonmagical Ranger and an updated fighter (not that they will do either of those).

Reddit is less than thrilled...

I am really doubting their judgement abilities...

I think that playtest has a lot of good things to offer.

Even the monk, for a first round, seems decent. Not quite there, but decent.

Yes, nerf to stunning strike, yes, not enough buffs. I'd like them to get wis or prof bonus to discipline points at level 2. Or a progression that is not db = level.

I'd also like them to either have d10 hp or the tasha's guide healing ability. Yes that is weak, but you can use all unspent points before a short rest.

They also get a 1 minute short rest. Will they be the only ones?
I missed that. Interesting. "7TH LEVEL: HEIGHTENED METABOLISM: If you spend at least 1 minute resting, you can give yourself all the benefits of a Short Rest. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a Long Rest."

I like it. Not sure I like the "you can only do this one time" thing but I like it. "I know how to focus my metabolism through deep meditation in only a single minute...but I only know how to do it once each day" is sort of strange.
