D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

The latest playtest packet for One D&D has just landed, and features five classes (Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard) and the new Weapon Mastery system.

In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents the rules on the Weapon Mastery property, updates to weapons, new and revised spells, several new feats, and five classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest documents.

I think the main reason they are droping pact magic is that they are moving away from major class features being short rest dependant.

I think they probably could have kept it and simply modified it a bit to match long rest.

So increase the number of spells to adjust, rather than destroy the unique identity

I'm a big fan of diversity in game systems. Warlocks were one of the few unique classes and it's a sad day to see that change.

So they ruined the coolest Caster in the game? BOOOOOOOORING.

Nah. Warlocks were too convoluted. Any time I was teaching a new player the game the game they had no interest in Warlock.

And the game just got measurably blander, narrower, and more boring. And it's not the pact magic that breaks other classes. (Hexblades...)

And far more playable, less broken, and noticeably stronger except for those meme multi-classing builds.

Arcanum is now a kind of Invocation. So a Warlock player can choose whether to be a fullcaster or a gish. That part is kinda cool.

Looking at the Arcane classes, they don't use the preparation system that Clerics and Druid were using. (Prep a number of spells equal to your number of spell slots.) I wonder if that's Arcane-only or a change in philosophy for casting overall. Or just floating multiple options to see what people like best.

The only new players I interacted with was a few years ago and they both went for the warlock.

Looking at the packet, Mystic Arcanum starts at 5th, and gives you one free casting of an arcane spell of your choice. The level of the spell is 3rd at 5th level, and goes up to 9th level spells at 17th. Major restriction is that while you can take the invocation multiple times, you can't take it to take a 2nd spell of a level you've already gained.
