Having never watched #1, would you please explain how these can possibly relate in any manner?

Apparently there was something in Lost Called the Dharma Initiative... Thus by calling it the Greg Initiative it becomes a Dharma and Greg Joke.

Didn't get the Greg initiative until it was explained here (never watched Lost), Loved cyclops and Odysseus, also enjoyed the 'was shy a pirate-robot-monkey too?" line from Elan.

I got all that except the Greg Initiative part. I mean, I figured it was a Lost reference as soon as they got in the hatch, but I forgot about Dharma and Gred entirely until this strip reminded me.

In non-pop culture reference humor, I liked the return of paladin Detect Evil Vision and the clarification that both Elan and the puppet aren't evil.

That's not an X-men joke, beyond the name (Colossus). The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the ancient wonders of the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus_of_rhodes

The ancient wonder of the world I know. But you have to realize that Colossus relates to the X-man Cyclops in that panel...

Uhh... Was there ever any doubt that Elan wasn't evil? Might be a question what flavor of good he is, but he ain't evil.
