my question was really "why would they want to tick people off?" especially D&Ders.

I like drow, it's just not the most iconic choice, even if it was in PHB1

Tiefling, they removed it to avoid ticking off parents worried about satanism (in 2008, can you believe this?), not to placate raging nerds.

Besides, nerd rage, even if they are a vocal minority, is bad publicity (otherwise why would wotc staffers take time to read and post in these forums to appease nerd anguish)
