new preview DMG2

chapter 1 group story telling

ok so I think this one has just the right mix of 'new guys need to know the basics' and 'hey we old foggies can mine it for ideas'. I have done some of these befor (With varying results) but I think it makes a good opeing chapter to the 2nd dm guide...

I do also remember a Dragon articale form the pizo years about useing movie or TV show formats...I have played with that as well and wonder of it will be mentioned.

how ever the part I think we will talk about most:

This is one of the reasons why I really like 4e.

The support offered to DMs in actually "running a game" and teaching new players is fantastic. I've felt for a long time that D&D has done a pretty bad job in actually teaching the skills of how to be a DM.

It seemed like before that all was offered was things like "random pages of tables" which are the LAST thing any DM should bother with.

Finally, something I can agree with.

Until now I've actually used White Wolf games for guidelines on stories and such.

Speaking of art, the art previews in the excerpt schedule are broken. Wonder if that's intentional?

I think this "landscape artwork" has been their best in the past. They just come of more evocative then character, class or race portraits.

Everything on the preview list looks interesting except Ch.1 Group Storytelling. What has that got to do with running a D&D game?
errr.... did you read the preview? From your comment it sounds like you just read the above list. Probably best to do before throwing out comments willy-nilly.

If the Story-Telling chapter is the least interesting then this book is going to be awesome. The idea of have the players play characters in 'aside' scenes to build tension/emotions towards what happens in later adventures is awesome. I feel inspired.

It might have something to do with D&D campaigns being about telling the stories of a group of fictional characters.

Oh. I thought it was a game of heroic fantasy wherein the players roleplay fictional characters having adventures. These adventures might have the makings of a great story at some point.

Group storytelling would come later as the participants tell the tale of thier escapades at a con or something.
