First let me say, those gnolls are wicked. I'm definitely going to grab some of those. I also want to say I am glad they're branching out into minis that can be used as PC's(good knight, evil knight, elf archer, female ranger, etc.) as well without the whole randomization factor.
Another thing I was thinkling about was that alot of people have argued that Reaper should do less of the "common" area of DDM and focus more on minis that are considered "rares" or uncommons in D&D. Here's a few points I was thinking about against that line of argument.
1. New players who are just starting in D&D or especially other rpgs(I actually want to expound on this a little further). People assume that everyone has bought DDM or have been in the game long enough, and have minis, that they don't need commmons. Yet this line of thinking excludes those who are new to D&D or are playing something other than D&D. If I'm playing Warhammer, Stormbringer, Runequest, etc.(and don't want to bust the money on metal minis) the Reaper line allows me to purchase the minis I want, without a bunch of minis that don't exsist in that game(beholders,half-dragon sorcerers, gnomes, Illithids, etc.). Now I know people will bring up the substitution argument, but if I'm spending money on minis I want them to actually represent what the PC's are encountering. This also helps Reaper build their own customer base in the PPM market without relying on WotC DDM to supplement them.
2. Fluctuating availability of DDM. At any given time the numbers of a particular mini can fluctuate greatly. Right now, because DDM hasn't really released alot of "human skeletons" they're actually kind of hard to find and a little on the expensive side for a DDM common. The way DDM is structured this could happen fairly often to not at all, depending on how many times per so many sets a particular type of figure is included.
3. Finally, and this istotally a personal reason...but I'd like them to hash out the quality and structure of their line with more of what could be considered "commons" and, as their quality improves and levels out produce more of the "rares" and uncommons. Especially since how much a DDM cost has no direct relation to the actual quality of paint job or quality of sculpt it's recieved.
I will say that this is Reaper's first go, and they're magnitudes better than DDM's first Harbringer set. So I will support them because I believe that given even less time than WotC they will supercede the quality of DDM..
