New Reaper Pre-painted Masters pics

I think to compare these Master Paints to a regular DDM is a bit unfair. When looking at the first series of Reaper pre-painted figs, they hardly compare to many DDM figures. That said, their minotaur is much better than the standard DDM minotaur... mostly because the DDM minotaurs seem to be less Cow-men than they are Cow-Bear-Gorilla-Men. Not sure why that is... but it is.

DDM skeletons blow the Reapers away, as do the Orcs. The Cave Troll looks cartoony. The Reaper Ogre would make a fine substitue for a Half-Ogre, but sadly D&D ogres don't look like that.

The new series looks very promising. The sculpts look nice, but the master paints are misleading. I can't wait to see what they look like in production. I picked up the Minotaur and the Ogre from the first set, and I foresee myself picking up at least the Ghost and the Wardog from the second set. :)

Wasn't WotC(not sure if they still do) posting master pics as they're previews for at least a while? I heard this but I'm not sure from where or if it's 100% accurate.

First of all, those are fantastic. I have a handful of these painted in metal because I liked the sculpts so much, so I'm really looking forward to the plastics.

That said, I think the choice of cast for the succubus was very poor. I have that figure in metal, and it cannot stand up under its own power. Most of its weight is over the edge of the base. In the first Legendary Encounters line, one of my minotaurs was cast slightly off-balance and has difficulty standing, so even figures that ordinarily stand can be imbalanced in plastic.

I'm rather ignorant about miniatures. Are those the same scale as the D&D minis?

Also, it seems to me that they aren't too easy to find online, except at Reaper's store. Noble Knight only has 3 and other stores don't seem to carry them.

miniaturemarket.com has all of the first series of them for pretty reasonable prices.

I like the gnolls. The ghost is also a buy for me. I have the marilith in metal but haven't assembled and painted her yet. I also have the bathalian in metal - interestingly, their choice of colors is very close to what I went with, I've always thought mind flayers should dress in wierd "clashing" color schemes that just don't go together to human eyes, to emphasize their alien mind-set. I put some orange in the robe as well, though.

WotC still uses the "master" pics for their galleries. Apparently they always have, they just didn't get caught at it for a while.

I like the ogre a lot better than the peculiar "Jar-Jar Binks" look of the DDM ogres, but at $5 a pop he's a bit expensive for mooks. A better sculpt (and a cheaper price!) is the Savage Ogre from the first Dreamblade set.

Yep, some of the mini's can be great - others can be somewhat disappointing when you get to see them for real. For example:

However, I'm not out to simply bash the WotC line - as I quite like buying a few boosters of whatever they put out - simply to build up a wide variety of miniatures (so if I ever get round to running a published adventure, or play in someone else's game - chances are that I have the right mini or a suitable proxy for a wide range of encounters). I was just pointing out that what you see on the WotC site might not be a 100% accurate representation of what you actually get.

Back on the topic at hand...
...I like the look (and the selection) of the future releases, and I applaud Reaper for posting pictures of the actual production mini's for the current range. We'll obviously get a better idea of what to expect from the next batch when we get similar 'production-run' pictures - and that is what I am looking forward to :)

And to stray off topic slightly... has anyone seen any of the first batch for sale over here in the UK yet?

I got to get some of these new Reaper Legendary Encounters minis, today
The Minitaur of the Maze
The Cave Troll
and the Ogre Chieftan
All three are very nice.

I'm still looking forward to the gnolls.

:)
