Earthbound Dragon Template

In some worlds dragons have lost their ability to fly, in others they have evolved to adapt to living below ground. These earthbound dragons differ from their flying cousins in a number of ways, gaining many abilities, and loosing a few.
Earthbound dragons look much like their winged cousins but differ in a number of ways, their claws and horns are bigger and more useful for digging, and the dragon gains an extra set of forelimbs in place of their former wings. Additionally the dragons’ scales harden to more easily repel falling debris.

Creating an earthbound dragon:
Earthbound dragon is a template that can be added to any creature with the dragon type that has a fly speed. The dragon, referred to here after as the “base creature” retains its type and any subtypes it might have. The base creature retains all its statistics unless noted otherwise.
[/b]Speed:[/b] The base creature looses any fly speed it might have had, but its burrow speed increases by 10’, if the creature did not already have a burrow speed it gains a burrow speed of 30’. If the base creatures land speed is less than 30’, it is increased to 30’
Armor Class: The base creatures natural armor increases by +2.
Full Attack: The base creature gains two claw attacks.
Damage: If the base creature had claw attacks already the new attacks use the same modifier and damage as the claw attacks already possessed by the dragon. If the base creature did not already possess a claw attack use the damage indicated in the following table based on its size.
Size Damage
Fine 1
Diminutive 1d2
Tiny 1d3
Small 1d4
Medium 1d6
Large 1d8
Huge 2d6
Gargantuan 2d8
Colossal 4d6
Special Attacks: An Earthbound dragon has all the special qualities of the base creature except the ones that rely on the ability to fly. In addition the base creature gains the following ability:
Ravage: If the earthbound dragon charges a foe it may make a full attack.
Special Qualities: An Earthbound dragon has all the special qualities of the base creature except the ones that rely on the ability to fly. In addition it gains the following ability:
Tremorsense (Ex): The earthbound dragon gains the tremorsense ability to a range of 30’ x the dragons’ age category or 60’ whichever is greater.
Abilities: Increase from the base creature as follows: Str +2, Con +2
Feats: Any feats whose prerequisite are based on the ability to fly should be replaced.
Environment: As base creature and underground.
Challenge Rating: As base creature +1
Level Adjustment: +2

Well, what do you think?

Nicely done!

This is one of those templates that completely makes sense in a 'blind pale monsters descended from creatures underground' sort of way. Have you considered giving them blindsense and making them blind? Though that doesn't work quite so well when you're talking about above-ground earthbound dragons, I guess...

Why should I give them an ability most dragons allready possess?

I think Jester meant blindsight, not blindsense. :)

Have you though about granting the Earth subtype with the template?
Yes, but that would have caused a conflict with dragons that possess the air subtype.

Shade: Hey, as long as you give me credit, it's good. :D
