Can anybody give me some tips on how to further progress into the general game? I've only recently started persuing my interest in the game, and have only played a couple of practice games.

Hello and welcome.I've gotten as far as Character creation, and basic checks and rolls, but I'm still confused about a lot of things, especially combat and modifiers.
Hello and welcome. In terms of D&D I think you've found the right site in EN World.
As for playing the game, the easiest way to learn about combat and the way the game plays is to watch a game being played. It's hard to put a lot of the mechanics into a context you're not completely familiar with. I don't know if there are any youtube videos of people playing but that could be a start. Alternatively, if your friendly local game store (FLGS) has a game being played, that could be good to watch (or even get involved in).
What books do you have?
Best Regards

Are you playing with a group?
I have all the core books for 3.5 and 4.
Also, D&D isn't all that popular in my town, I've been to all the gaming stores here and they don't even SELL D&D stuff because of the lack of popularity. It was hard enough finding the dice.
The best way to learn the game is to join a game. Its also kinda the point of learning the game. I would start by looking in the gamers seeking games sections here and on the WotC boards for people in your area. I noticed several GA posting on the wizards board.
