New Vistas - Exploring The Louisiana Purchase

Angel Tarragon

Dawn Dragon
All right, here is a game set in early 1804. The Louisiana Purchase is the biggest thing that has happened and people want to take advantage of it. The game will use the core set of Grim Tales and Sidewinder: Recoiled, sans magic.

Characters will start at 7th level. I want detailed character histories and backgrounds (try to fill up one full page in a word application). Your characters will join a wagon train bound for the new territory seeking to start a new life and possibly find fame and fortune.

Choose a Starting Occupation from Sidewinder. The game will be using the Cold Hard Cash rule with the following modification: 2d6 + wealth bonus x $25. A character with the Windfall feat adds +3 to their CHC check, and may only be taken once (at first level).

Talents may be chosen from any listed in Grim Tales and Sidewinder with the following exceptions:

Banned Talents
Magical Adept
Turn Undead

Banned Skills
Craft (Electrical)
Knowledge (Arcane Lore)
Operate Vehicle

Additional Feats

Advanced Skill Focus
Prereq: Character level 6, skill focus
Benefit: Choose a skill that you have focused in. The bonus from from your skill focus increases from +3 to +5. Further, when using an action point to improve your success with the skill you roll a 1d8.

Feats from other sources:

Deadlands - Hell On Earth:
Level Headed
Sand
The Stare
The Voice

Player's Guide to Faerûn:
Horse Nomad
Swift & Silent
Thug
Tireless

Races of Stone:
Mountaineer

Stargate SG1:
Talented
Training
Unlocked Potential

I will be using the survival rules found in Sandstorm and if you have it you can take the following feats:
Heat Endurance
Improved Heat Endurance
Sandskimmer

Characters start with the following ability scores: 17, 15, 14, 13, 12, 10
InvisibleCastle.com will be used for die rolls.

Saddle up!

Very slick idea! I'm too tied up to join another game right now, but wanted to stop by and wish you luck. Looks like we will have the only two Sidewinder games on these board, which is a cryin' shame. ;)

Thanks! I hope the idea flies and plenty of people are interested.

Believe it or not, the first two decades of the 19th century is my favorite time period in all of U.S. history. It's such a strange, transitional period, with the fledgling country starting to stretch its wings. Lots of horrible things too, of course, but that is standard for all of human history, sadly.

I'm sorry to say that I don't have the Sidewinder rules :(

Good luck with the game, though!

I guess I have to be one more to wish you luck with this REALLY neat sounding game and second BO's comment about this being the most exciting era of American history.

Wish I had the rule books involved!

I'm just curious, how does Sidewinder compare to the other d20 Wild West adaptions (Deadlands, Spellslinger, etc)?
I honestly have no idea. I only managed to get Deadlands: Hell On Eart & Lost Colony for a dollar a piece and don't own the other books you mention.
