Looking for an easy to use module for a one on one play between me and my boyfriend. We've played in a group before, but since our group hasn't had time to get together, we wanted to play for a bit and get some experience DMing as well.

If anyone has any advice, or campaigns they'd be willing to share, we'd be grateful.

Most modules are built for groups and, accordingly, don't easily translate to solo adventures. This leaves you with two options.
(1) Add NPCs or have your solo-player play more than one character. If you're new to the game this is really challenging. If you're experienced, this is really empowering since they have virtually flawless strategy. Neither of these are great.
(2) Write your own module. This is generally a better solution because you can tailor it to your needs. The great thing about solo campaigns is that balance has no meaning. You just have to challenge the PC and that means you can give as many rewards or treasures or magic items or whatever. Make people happy, have fun, and it'll be D&D at its best.

Any advice on making my own campaign? I've never done it before, so any advice I can get would be very helpful
 




I have run several one-on-one campaigns over the years. I would suggest using 3.5 gestalt character rules. Have your boyfriend run a rogue/something and you run an npc rogue/something else (ie if he runs a fighter, run a cleric or wizard, if he runs a sorcerer, you run a fighter). Make sure you have at least one spellcaster of some sort in the pairing.

If both of the characters are rogues, you can easily run lower-combat "sneaky" type missions. I suggest mostly in-town so that you're always close to a healing source, because you don't want to have to constantly give access to healing potions, etc... especially if there's no cleric in the pairing.

I ran a fairly successful adventure in a coastal town where the town council hired the newly-arrived PC and his henchman to investigate smuggling activity around town. This meant lots of investigation of the sewers, skulking around in alleys, even some spying on various wealthy townsfolk and guildsmen, and eventually the discovery that one of the town councilmen was behind a great deal of the illegal activities; he was working against the local temple that also wanted to control mercantile trade in town (merchant god). It was a complex setup that also involved a power-hungry politico from a different region of the kingdom, so I can't describe it in detail here, but the PC got to do LOTS of semi-political adventuring; it was loads of fun and we kept that game going for over a year (my husband and I).
