Nice Balrog!

The Sword points to their Elemental origins, it would seem. Planar issues in 4E seem to break down thusly:

Angels:Astral::Archons:Elemental
Devils:Astral::Demons:Elemental

Thus:

Angels:Devils::Archons:Demons

I like it. Aside from the Efreeti, I've been much more impressed with the 4e art over the 3.5 art.

Its been a mixed bag for me. Some of its really impressive, some of its pretty blah. The book covers definitely fall into the latter category. Its still a step up over most 3rd edition art, and a giant leap over the trash I think of when I think of 2nd edition, but I miss Elmore, Easley and Parkinson.

You mean the one-eyed king of the Fomorians?!
The D&D name for the "Balrog" became Balor because the Tolkien estate asked TSR to be a little less Infringing back in the day. Same reason why RPG's call "Ents" 'Treants'.

I'm going to call them :Demons and :Devils from now on. Thanks, Ulthwithian!

Is there a picture of the new pit fiend? I've always felt that having pit fiends and balors was redundant and just there for the sake of symmetry. They are basically the same thing.

Speaking of Treants

Do we know if Treants are in the new MM? I am thinking of running a very tolkien-esque campaign and I would love to use them. In 20 years of role-playing I don't think I have ever encountered or ran a game with treants.

In a high-level epic game, I managed to goad one of my friends into not only playing as a treant; but a monk/drunken master treant as well. Sadly I couldn't convince him to take the "Flying Kick" feat. :D

It was an interesting game to say the least. :D
