Every Campaign Setting, including this one I play in daily called Earth, has some silly names running around it - or need I remind anyone of Intercourse, Pennsylvania, or Wank, Germany? (It's all in the pronunciation...)
As for Sharn, it doesn't remind me of the city because the city backdrop never stood out that much. If it reminds you of that, then perhaps you watched the D&D movie a little TOO often?

Since the setting was inspired by several movies (and if you read the list you know where to look to find them) the parallels come as no surprise. Personally it does not bother me, but it also is a dead ringer for the city in the DND movie. It is! It is! It is!!! Whether some wish to see it or not, it's completly true.

Luckily, I never saw the movie that shall not be mentioned, bearing some resembling to a certain roleplaying game, so I have no problems there.
As to the city and atmosphere, they remind me more of the fifth element and bladerunner respectively then that they remind me of any fantasy type movie... sortof like shadowrun but then in the past...
