Cute but dangerous
Yes, it's edition warring, too, even with 5e not being out yet. Thread titles like "5e is a mess" and the like aren't acceptable.

As with all editions, there are people who like it and probably as many who do not. If you want to post your opinion, as per the rules of the forum, do not use generalizations like the above example, or claim that one designer or the other has no clue about what they did/are doing.

Thanks.

Just to clarify what we mean by "bashing" - this does NOT mean you can't criticize a game. You most certainly can, and should; "bashing" is a different animal to criticizing. It's because we've had a rash of people calling the actual D&D Next designers names, which is behaviour we do not condone. You are welcome to express your opinion of the game, but we want you to be civil about it. Keep it non-personal, please.

I hope that it didn't come across as being pro/against a specific game; that's not the message we want to send. We're just against the current rash of people insulting 5E designers, some of whom are members here. We'd certainly say the same if people started insulting the designers of any other games.

I don't mind constructive criticism or even input from players who want to play Next one day but want X feature from Y edition (whether it's 4th or not). But when I see asinine things such as put healing surges or encounters or milestones or AEDU back into Next, it's really annoying, because not only is it futile (the designers said they won't, because the 1/2/3e/PF player base has spoken and they need us to stay afloat more than we need Next), it just lowers the signal-to-noise ratio and borders on trolling.

Next is not 4e, not will it ever be, nor will it ever need to be. It should take what it can from it, that's good, but find a way to not make it an annoyingly obtuse and needlessly complex game to play. It's time people forget some of the essential 4e features that are never going to get into Next, and come up with ideas on what could work or be implemented in Next given its design mandate (a faster game that has more classic D&D appeal). They've managed to do that, to my astonishment, in many areas (cantrips substituting for at-wills for wizards, metamagic built-in to spells)

Again, if people don't want to play that game, IMO they shouldn't even be discussing it, and it borders on trolling. Once you've said enough times that "I will never play Next" it's time to stop posting in threads specifically tagged "D&D Next".

I don't go into 4e threads with anything but constructive posts, but when I'm writing my opinion in a Next thread, of course my bad experiences with 4e (and some good experiences too, no doubt) will colour my posts, but that's par for the course, you cannot design a new edition without taking into account the past (even if only to say "this is something we SHOULDN'T do, because it complexitifes the game without the added benefit of realism or fun).

But when I see asinine things such as ....

Here's a hint: If you don't want to look like a jerk, don't refer to other people's opinions as "asinine".

We have said it a bazillion times, and we will say it a bazillion more, if need be: We expect users to SHOW RESPECT for others and their opinions.

You don't need to agree with them. You may think that their ideas are the worst things since bicycles for fish. But you should treat them like the person you're speaking to or about is more important than your personal opinion.

Because, really, they are. We're talking about a hobby game, pretending to be elves. There is nothing so important here that it justifies treating a fellow gamer shabbily. There's enough of people treating each other poorly out in the real world - don't perpetuate it here, please and thank you.

It's OK, Gorgoroth. The worthlessness of your ideas doesn't offend me in the slightest. I like reading the forums to find all ideas, both stellar and those not worth the electrons in which they're written, because the surviving end product will help make a better game.

We could boycott bashing. Or would a bashing boycott be a bashing of its own, thus becoming a never ending boycott bashing boycott?

Im just poking a lttle fun at Gorgoroth for his own asinine commentary in the Boycott NEXT thread from a couple weeks ago.

Whoops....

Its not possible to discuss a new edition without comparing and contrasting other editions. And some people are gonna get their panties in a bunch when you do that to their favorite edition or some aspect of it.

At what point do we tell them to grow the hell up and repeat the old mantra "sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me"?
