No alignment

(Sorry if this topic has been hashed and rehashed)

I'd like to run my next campaign with no concept of Alignment.
This would mean that alignment-specific spells and abilities would either be removed from the game or changed (i.e. Detect Evil could be Detect Evil Intent or Detect Creatures that Want You Dead or something); classes that require specific alignments would no longer have such a restriction of course.

The only reason that alignment causes so much heartburn is because of the real-world connotations that the words "good" and "evil" have. Change these to something less controversial, say "light" and "dark", and you take most of the heat out. It may also have the effect of encouraging a more morally ambiguous style of play, but that may be what you're after.

In the campaign i am going to run I plan on removing the Law/Chaos axis, and pretty much doing away with Neutrality for sentient beings. My world is mostly about good/evil right/wrong. However I plan to do considerable modification for intent, attempts to change outlook and behaviour etc.
I dont really like the idea of totaly removing the concepts of good and evil, and magic that goes along with them, from fantasy. I think removing the IMO silly DnD "law" and chaos stuff and sticking to good and evil and the complexities their off, mundane and supernatural will make for a more interesting experience. Alignment ceases to be a crutch and becomes an interesting part of the game and storylines.
