That's basically the entire field of marketing, rolled into one sentence.

People.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

WotC gambled that the tone of advertising/marketing they used would draw more customers than it would drive away.

Only they know whether it worked or not, but you can be sure that even if it was a success, many of them feel that it was a Pyrrhic success, and not one they want to repeat.
