Non-armor bonuses to AC?

Jeff Wilder

First Post
What are possible bonuses to AC other than "armor bonus"?

Those I can think of: shield bonus, natural armor bonus, dodge bonus, deflection bonus, luck bonus, circumstance bonus ...

Any others? Are all of the possible bonus types listed somewhere?

I have a half-ogre who's going to need to pump his AC without wearing armor.

- Size bonus
- Insight bonus (Ioun stone)
- Cover bonus (mount + high riding skill)
- Enhancement bonuses to armor and/or shield,
- Enhancement bonus natural armor (amulet of natural armor, which stacks with any regular natural armor)
- Unnamed bonus (defending weapon)
- Dex bonus
- Enhancement bonus to dex (gloves of dex)
- Monk/Wisdom bonus (monk's belt)

... and probably many more (sacred, profane, etc.). Instead of me detailing them, check out this thread for more complete information.

which stacks with say, alter-self: troglodyte form
Which doesn't work when the base creature isn't humanoid. Half-ogres are giants.

On the bright side, half-ogres are giants. :p

Also: insight bonuses to AC.

Yeah. I noticed that (and changed it) afterwards. I also removed the reference to reduce person. They were just examples anyway, but best not to suggest an example that the OP cannot use.

Any idea on how to use this effectively? A ring of spell-storing loaded with alter self could give him the shape of an actual ogre (+5 natural AC), but I believe that is about it.

Now that I had in the original post.

There are a couple other giants 5 HD or less - forest troll, for example, although he loses his size that way. Taers are technically giants, I think, but again, are medium. I'm sure there's something I'm not remembering off the top of my head.

That's more or less what I was thinking. That and he's pretty rough and tumble to begin with, being a half-ogre. I believe some of the troll variants may have fewer than 5hd as well, and would thus qualify. I'd have to look, though.

Oop, so you did. My mistake. :D
