Non-D&D 4Ed

Thanks for the correction. Facts in print- even on the Internet- are usually a bit more reliable than 16 tear old memories!

I agree, the current 4th edition should have been called something different such as Heros and Rogues H&R ?

And D&D 3.5 should have become D&D 4th edition but should have been something more along the lines of pathfinder, with perhaps a little more changes but not much more.

Actually my sub-conscious seems to consider pathfinder the latest D&D and 4thed well something else that has it's place but not D&D. Sorry WOTC but it's like they took a combine harvester and said look here's the new version and it turned out to be a tractor. Well the tractor may be well and good but I want to use the combine harvester.

Thank heavens for Pathfinder.

As far as the question how would I have done the non-D&D 4th ed:

1) Use a D100 instead of D20 engine
2) Get the virtual game table actually working at the beginning and provide free open source PBP web site open source software for website owners to use that would have dice roller and combat mapping
3) Got much better artists
4) Perhaps a point system with free reign of ability allocation a bit like mutants and masterminds but in a fantasy setting.

Seeing the quotes from Adkinson made me remember the announcement. Besides, given the month and year it would make actually researching the original quote easier. Things like that had a way of showing up in issues of Scrye, Inquest and the Duelist too and I would have been reading all 3 back then in addition to Dragon heh.

1) What benefit is actually gained by switching to percentile instead of d20? A bit more granularity maybe, but that doesn't always equal better.
3) You may want to speak with the people in charge of the art direction rather than the artists. The artists are drawing what they're told to.
4) You can already do that with M&M. People were using M&M to run D&D style games soon after the first edition of it was released. Very flexible systems like True20 are also an option.
