Non-spellcasting priests?

I think basing the Proseltyize ability on the Hypnotism spell would work better.

For flavor reasons, or because basing it on charm person is too powerful? I wanted to make it a sort of watered-down version of the ability that the High Proletyzer (from ELH) gets, with the ability to rally crowds to perform actions. Preaching to the faithful to get them to attack the infidels seems like a much cooler ability than just having them stand there and watch you.

Anyone else have any opinions on this class? Anyone?

BUMP!

That's it. Charm Person makes the target a trusted friend and ally. Hypnotism changes their attitude to the suggestion you've made.

Here's the difference as I see it in a game:

(Hypnotism) Your priest gives a rousing sermon on the virtues of potatoes in a town that hates potatoes (Unfriendly attitude to potatoes). Those who hear you (and fail the save) now consider the virtues of potato farming (Friendly attitude).

(Charm Person) You give the same rousing sermon. Now everybody thinks of you as a trusted friend and ally. But they still don't care about potatoes unless you specifically mention it after the sermon; and, by telling them to grow potatoes, you could decide to have them shun foreigners (or whatever).

Although both spell effects will work, Hypnotism ties the sermon to the game effect. Charm Person doesn't.

Options for Clerics...

Well, not to be too self promoting, but the UMBRAGIA Volume IV: Liber Sacerdoti sneak peek shows some options... the book itself is not complete yet, but the ideas are there to show you what direction we are taking with the servants of the divine.

For more information on what we are doing, check out hte sneak peek and more here.

Meepo, this is great stuff. I love the idea of the spell-less church and you've helped inspire me even further to continue working on my alt cleric.

Perhaps the only suggestions I would make would be to leave some gaps in the ability progression of your priest. As it stands, it seems very reward heavy, even though there's no spellcasting.

The second suggestion probably doesn't apply since this is a very setting-specific core class, but I'd remove the references to free room & board, immunity from the law and so on so that the class could be applied more generically to "clerics."

Great stuff.
