Non-standard PC races and starting money

If someone plays a dark-elf (ECL +2) Ftr6, do they get starting loot as though they were an 8th level character, or a 6th level character? Where (if anywhere) is this stated?

Your character's beginning equipment is based on his effective level, not his class level.

By the core rules, it's 6th level, and my strong opinion is that's the preferable rule.

DMG p. 24: "A creature with no class levels has the standard gear for a creature of its kind. A creature with class levels has equipment worth an amount based on the total of those class levels."

However, the DMG was written before the concept of ECL's was fully developed.

Disregarding the rules as written is your choice, but the FRCS is very clear on this.

The DMG proto-ECL rules are crazy in many ways; this is just one example. I suggest FRCS rules (even though I don't like the Realms), since they're better developed and generaslly make more sense.

For example, look at the section under the one you quoted -- "Experience for Monsters". It has effective level for XP equal to HD, so an 'ECL 5' half-dragon Bbn2 starts with 1,000 XP and levels at 3,000, while the rest of the group has 10,000 and levels at 15,000. The half-dragon template effectively costs much less than ECL/LA +3...
