Nostalgia

They ought to make an Old Milwaukee commercial based on this. Picture this..

A bunch of guys sitting around a table, rolling dice, and sipping their drinks.

One of them says: Guys, it doesn't get any better than this.

Who wouldn't buy a product advertised that way?

don't forget the pretzels. you can't have beer & pretzels gaming without them. :D

But based on what you, and Olgar and Joe have said about your (D's) old gaming group, it's a different picture on the outside than from the inside. :)

Don't mind diaglo; he's all bark. IRL he's not as rabid as his online persona -- he only occasionally froths at the mouth. ;)

And he seems to like 3.X just fine when someone else is DMing.

don't blame me. Joe and several other ENWorlders have contacted me over the years about games in the Atlanta area. i am more than willing to share information about DMs/Campaigns/styles of play/etc...

i have played with a variety of gamers.

it took me years to widdle the group down to ones i could mold into the type i liked. ;) esp...the DMs. :D

i give a huge thumbs up to JoeBlank for taking the plunge.

Glad I took the plunge, too. I got lucky because diaglo had already "widdled the group" down to some great players and a fanstastic DM.

When I joined Olgar's group I had never gamed on a regular basis with anyone other then a close group of friends, most of whom I have known since gradeschool. I had never met any of them in person until I showed up to play.

Well, I've just about played them all over the years, and IMHO they all have their good points and their bad points. In the end the nostalgia for me is definitely the good times, and most importantly, the time we had to play. Yes, I have more $$$ to spend on stuff now, but we used to play one or two times a week and had the occasional all-nighter. Now it's more like once everyone one or two months and we need to end so we can get kids to bed, or because one of the players who is a nurse on the night shift can't stay awake any longer after working the night before. Heck, I have so many adventures I want to write, but I don't have the time so I usually am stuck using modules, hopefully having a chance to modify them some. Time, I just miss the time

I just need to win a lottery. If anyone here has won one recently, that's my ticket, I dropped it outside the store ;)

I can tell you Joe it can certainly be hit-or-miss joining groups where everyone is a stranger. Now that I'm on the messageboard for that other group a number of rather um.. fearful(?) politcal views seem to be about 1/2 the discussion. I didn't see this with any of the players when I DM'd. It was actually very nice as they are all long term friends. But now, after working so hard to join, reading the DM's comments on that board have me one foot out the door.

It truly can suck at times.

But, OTOH, you can get damn lucky and find a group right nearby with an awesome DM and wonderful, seasoned players. I only wish we could have convinced the Army to leave Olgar in Atlanta. Damn MP's!!

I'll never set foot on their base again! (by military court order) ;)

Having said that, GDW's little black books are to me what OD&D is to Diaglo. I still have those. Nothing has ever improved on them, as far as I'm concerned.;)
Amen. I bought them a few months ago for curiosity's sake, and they are very, very, very well written and look perfectly playable - you can essentially play in a "Foundation" setting with no aliens in it with the three basic books. I like this. A lot!
