Nostalgic for basic D&D or AD&D?

Just last night, I found myself pouring through my AD&D Monster Manual, my The Compleat Spellcaster (a 1983 AD&D supplement featuring new items, spells, monsters and demons), not just for a stroll down memory lane, but actually utilize the material!

That has been a great feeling, going back through all my old stuff, looking for stuff to actually use. Together. Under one rules system. Awesome.

Amen!

Treebore, was is the relationship between TL, C&C, and Gary Gygax? I noted he'd authored the PDF on multi-/dual-classing, et al. for C&C. Was that Gygax's system of choice before he passed?

No. Gary preferred his own Lejendary Adventures system, or alternatively a variant of the OD&D system.

Your post prompts me to ask. . . If you have a desire to play BD&D or AD&D, why not actually play Basic D&D or AD&D? Both of these games are still available for purchase at RPGNow in every edition from Holmes Basic D&D to AD&D 2e, as are dozens of the orginal supplements and adventure modules. These are the real deal! C&C is definitely an option if you want something like BD&D or AD&D, but if what you want is the real deal, it's still out there.

Speaking for myself, you can only get that stuff in PDF or second hand from ebay or the like. I actually enjoy C&C because it is in print, has new material coming out and feels close enough to AD&D that it's comfortable but with innovations I enjoy. YMMV of course

Troll Lords has a booklet for "Starsiege" in our Free RPG Day box.

It also uses the "SIEGE engine" rules that C&C uses.

I think that BD&D/AD&D/OD&D really have as much if not more material being produced to support them. However, most of that stuff is for free and fan-made.

I'll be interested in seeing CKG when it comes out.

I'm genuinely curious about this as I was under the impression Gary was a strong endorser of C&C. Do you have a link to the relevant info?

Gary was a strong endorser of C&C... however, there's no doubt that he played LA and oD&D in preference. Have a look in the archived Q&A with Gary threads.

Cheers!

Gary supported and endorsed C&C, but his system is Lejendary Adventures, a percentile based roll under system. TLG also supports LA and they have several new editions (printings?) of LA coming out, and have already published a few adventures.

Castle Zagyg and Yggsburgh are both nominally published under the C&C system, even though the Yggsburgh HB confuses that issue since it was published before the final decision to go fully C&C was made afterwards. Hopefully Yggsburgh, the Hard Back, will sell out soon so TLG can make a new printing that will clear that up plus correct all the pricing issues.

Plus, in case some ENWorlders were waiting for some kind of announcement:

Pre orders for CASTLE ZAGYG: THE Upper Levels (character levels 1-4) are now open for pre orders.

Yep. As I understand it his "Porch Games" were all LA. Or at least mostly. Still, Gary played anything, like most of us, as long as it looked to be fun.

Do you have a link to Gary officially endorsing C&C?

Just curious. Obviously, he worked on material for TLG that was ported to C&C, and before that, D&D 3.0.
