D&D (2024) Not a fan of the new Eldritch Knight

I was referring to the PRINT character sheet. Or are we going to have different rules for print and digital character sheets now?

Are you talking about the one in the PHB with the numbers in a bubble on it? The part with Cantrips is part of "Step 5 Fill in Details" and on page 40 in the instructions on filling it out it specifically calls out to "Record class details"

So, yeah the class is a central part of that, both in the book and on DNDBeyond.

@ECMO3

I know this is an old thread but I'm going to try a Eldritch Knight for a game. Mostly heist stuff.

Forgive me if this was already mentioned, when you take magic initiate, you get to choose your spellcasting stat. So would taking shillelagh be a good use of a feat? That way, you can max Int and fight with a staff. Maybe take Polearm Master? Unfortunately, if you don't pad strength, you lose out on a reach polearm and are forced to stick with a staff.

It is one way to do this, but I am not a big fan of it. A fighter gives up a lot by putting points into intelligence and you are limited to clubs and staffs and PAM does not boost intelligence.

If you are going to do this I think you are better off using a club with a nick weapon and the dual wielding feat to get two extra light attacks a turn (after the first turn). This gives you two extra attacks a round and at level 7+ combining with Truestrike, you could get all your attacks except one with intelligence.

few problems with EK, and AT while we are at it.

1/3rd caster. It's simply too slow with gaining new spell levels.

wow, you can cast Dimmension door or Banishment? wizard is already destroying reality with wish for two levels.

they should have really found room for subclasses so EK and AT can be half casters, even if it means buffing rest of 3 subclasses for both classes.
it's not that fighter and rogues are close to the top in 2024. Ok, fighters are good, but not the top good.

another problem is with War magic.
cantrip added to extra attack should have been coded at 5th level.
that means that at 3rd level it should have been: when you gain Extra attack feature, you can replace one attack with a cantrip.
then give something else at 7th level. maybe ability to cast 1st level spell instead of attack. and leave 2nd level spells for Improved war magic at 18th level.

This means Eldritch Blast is not even usable with it and it means if you want to use it in combat you really need to have a good Intelligence, when most fighters dump intelligence.
You really cant get EB without taking a level in Warlock anyway now that Magic Initiate is limited to CDW. Combined with the other issue it sounds less like Eldritch Knight is worse and more like it no longer having the same multiclass synergies.

Which I'd wager is the point of the changes.

Opportunity cost as you kinda want shillagh if you do that.

Most of the spells you want don't require intelligence anyway. Due to MAD 14 about the best you should have.
Many of the best spells for EK, like Shield, Enlarge and Misty Step, do not require INT at all, you can dump stat it.
