D&D 4E Not going to 4e

it's the small things like 0-9th level spells that makes D&D what it is.
I disagree; there are many ways to skin a cat with regard to the crunch, and get the same basic effect. 25 spell levels? 9? 900? Doesn't matter to me. The fluff is the D&D identity bit, IMO...within reason. Going from a class archetypes system to a skill-based system would probably unD&Dise it for me, because it would shelve the archetypes that give D&D it's identity and "mythological resonance", but they're not doing that.

4e seems to be D&D made by people who don't like D&D. And made for people who don't like D&D.

That makes an uncommon amount of sense to me, but I'd never have thought of saying it. Well put.

Wow, you sure are nit-picky. I can hardly believe you wasted energy typing that. C'mon, be real man. You know what I was getting at.
Hey, you were the one who said that it's the small things that make D&D what it is (and specifically listed 0-9th level spells, which 1st edition didn't have, as an example). Well, do they or don't they?

I There is a lot about old D&D that makes you wonder what Gary was thinking. But because it doesn't make sense to you, doesn't mean it should be changed. There was a reason Gary did what he did.

I'm surprised you didn't go on to say, "We must all have faith in Gary" or something like that.

4e seems to be D&D made by people who don't like D&D. And made for people who don't like D&D.
I don't think the former is quite true or fair. A lot of designers at TSR didn't play the game, apparently, whereas WOTC designers seem to. There seem to be less people counting time before launching their novelist career in the WOTC offices than there were at TSR, at least.

As for the latter, well, they mean well for the hobby and for their bottom line. The intentions are okay, even if I may baulk at some of the specifics. It makes a good soundbite though.

Then 1st edition wasn't D&D, because it didn't have 0 level spells (not in the core rules, anyway).

Unearthed Arcana had cantrips, the equivalent of 0th level spells. It did not however, have 8th and 9th level spells for anyone other than wizards. ;)

This I think is the entire problem. 4e seems to be D&D made by people who don't like D&D. And made for people who don't like D&D.

That observation is worthy of being added as a signature.
