Not like Dennis Lehane

Psionicist

Explorer
I just finished reading Mystic River and Shutter Island, both great novels. I absolutely love the authors style and writing - he is incredibly good at it compared to many other writers in the same genre.

Before I read all his other works I crave something different, thrillers still but of a different style. Any suggestions? I don't really care about the actual story, but how it's carried out (why I dislike Dan Brown for example).

Thanks!

Just a quick question, how close was Mystic River to the movie? I loved the movie. I have not read any of his stuff. I want to.

They are very different. I loved the movie, gave it a 10/10 on IMDB even. Then I read the book a year later. For reference I watched the movie again, and it should more be 8/10 (7/10 and +1 for good acting). Everthing in the book is so much better, the Douglas Adams-like details everywhere you just cannot put on film. Dennis' descriptions are worth it alone!

I agree with Psionicist. I read the book before I saw the movie, and I think the movie suffered from bad casting. Well, not bad per se, but I would've liked to see other actors in the roles. Sean Penn did well, but he was kind rehashing his role as a "semi-reformed criminal" as in Dead Man Walking. Tim Robbins was a terrible choice for Dave, though. He's too oafish, whereas Dave was quite calculating.
