Notes on the Aether (Rae judging)

As the party hurries toward the fire, Tommy thinks aloud, "I think we can take it as a given that a large fire of magical nature near Grenton is probably Thyrin's doing; Arngrim said he was accident prone. If I recall correctly, Arngrim said that there were three possibilities for one of Thyrin's Worst Case Scenarios: an intruder, a misfired trap, or a conjuration experiment gone wrong. In any of these cases, our priority must be to find out if Thyrin or any of his assistants survive, to put out the fire if possible to preserve as much of their valuable magical research as possible, and to remove the notes to safety as quickly as possible. As an addendum, there is also the possibility that an intruder has stolen the notes we seek and fired the tower to cover his escape." Tommy sighs. "I wish I had prepared Endure Elements today."

"Ha ha!" says Keldar. "I'd like to meet the thief who ransacked a wizard's tower and ran off with all his valuables and secrets. He'd be... er... totally reckless... and would need a good talking to."

"Perhaps a spanking?" Rapture says to Keldar, with an eyebrow raised.

"Yes, that was it. A spell or a trap gown awry. Either could be the source of the fire, which is not being put out by talking about it."

[sblock=OOC:Trouvere]I noticed you called Rapture Helen in the OOC post earlier. I hope you got all the name references in her background. I made them quite amusing if I do say so myself :)[/sblock]

"Maybe later, honeycake. We've got a fire to investigate first," shoots back Keldar.[sblock=Solange]Dendra was a very clever touch.[/sblock]

As the party moves towards Grenton, you notice that the fire does not seem to grow or shrink. It stays the same same size until you are getting into the outlying fields of Grenton. Then there is a faint blue flash from the direction of the fire, and the upper flames die away, leaving a growing plume of shimmering smoke.

The town of Grenton seems to be having a roughly normal day through all this, with the exception of a few men manning a impromptu barricade at the road leading south. Soon after the flash occurs, a woman walks up to you and says "You look like you're the adventurers that letter from the wizard mentioned. Could you go check on the tower down south? Things like this" She gestures at the smoke "happen fairly often, but they usually clear up, and this has been going on for a day and a half now. We're starting to worry that it might get out of control. More so than it already is, I mean, and start spreading up this way."

"Yes, that's me. Keldar, Keldar Warbray. I brought some friends. A tower, eh? How far south? High one? Windows? Other buildings nearby?"

"Why the barricade?" Tommy asks, gesturing to the men blocking the road to the south. "Do you expect someone or something hostile to come this way?"

[sblock=Trouvere]I was more amused who her owner (and later husband, which gives her a last name) was, given she was then property of his. Maybe I'm easily amused.[/sblock]

"Perhaps to keep curious people out?" Rapture suggests about the barricade. "Indeed, we'll look into this m'lady and see if we can't help put it out."
