Yup they are, the main distinction between Chromatic and Metallic Dragons in terms of their behaviour are:

-Chromatics: Much more predatorial and ferocious, have a higher tendency to hoard treasure.

-Metallic: They are more found of power and authority.

Right. They're not cardboard cutouts of good and evil any more.

Hehe, it actually makes me want to do a "Temeraire" game. In it there are those Dragons who serve beside mankind, generally in militaristic terms (in Europe, in China they are viewed as regular citizens) and the Ferals which fit quite well with Chromatics since they essentially while not evil or anything are predators and such.

It is also neat since it is set during the Napoleonic Wars, so you got various Dragon war-tactics and such, and the outcome of battles are different thanks to the Dragons.

If I may be so bold as to offer a personal opinion: The Book of Madness and the Libris Mortis were both about twice as awesome as the Draconomicon, and in fewer pages. I for one am fairly certain that all that needs to be said about the dragons could be fit into one book of this size, or two lesser ones, if they absolutely must have twinned tomes for the chromatic and their shiney-assed cousins. This book is nearly a whole extra PHB. I find it rather disconcerting that a single type of monster is going to take up two entire books, and come near to double the player's handbook. Quite frankly, I suspect this is going to contain a hell of a lot of filler.

I'm not rabid about this, I may be proven wrong. But I'm pretty anti-filler. Not only is it a transparent tactic intended to justify higher prices, it also actually reduces the quality of the text as a whole - a really tight, well-edited book is more useful than one I have to wade through to find the gems.

Dragons? Blech. As with 3e, I'd much prefer a book devoted to the fey--though, considering the new cosmology, it seems likely I'll actually manage to get what I want this time around.

I'm not so sure you've got that term right--isn't Chromammary Man the name they gave to that fossil of early Homo sapiens?
