D&D 5E Number of Goodberries - 10 or 1D10??

Just starting with a 5e druid on lvl8. quick question please: PHB RAW states in the Goodberry spell description that "UP TO 10 BERRIES APPEAR"... looking through all the forums, noone seems to question the fact that this automatically means 10 berries, or at least it's in the hand of the caster how many appear. Knowing my DM, however, he might read it in such a way as to require a d10 roll to determine how many actually appear (due to the "up to"). Is there any other evidence that the spell always makes 10 GBs appear, or is it just players wishful thinking that this is how it should be played? Any supporting arguments much appreciated ;-)

Why would you (or your DM) assume 1d10? It could be 2d5 or 5d2 or 1d8+2 or 1d4+6 or 1d20-10 or...

The point is, there is no indication that the number should be randomized, because no formula for randomization is given. It could be and that's the DM's call, but I'd definitely find out what the formula is before deciding on taking the spell. Especially if you were playing a ranger, instead of a druid.

If the game wants you to roll a random variable, it explicitly tells you each and every time.

It says "Up to 10" in order to give you the option of conjuring less if you had reason to want to do so.

good points guys

@SilverDEFENDER, yes, that's a good point, and also to Giant2005, you are right, the game normally spells it our explicitely the way it's randomized, when it is...

Thanks for the quick answers!

Just so you know, if you're replying to me, "Rune" is the moniker. "Silver Defender" is a title. I'm not the only user with it.

If others have the same screen colour as me then it is an easy mistake to make and you have put a pretty good disguise on your name. The name "Rune" blends into the background colour making it hard to see. The most prominent words are "Silver Defender".

Maybe you should consider changing the colour of your name to something that does not blend into the background. If you were trying to disguise your name I would guess that you'd rolled a 13 (including bonuses) - not enough to fool those who are sharp of eye, but enough to fool many.

Rabbitbait: I don't think you can choose the color of your username. Rune's is silver because he has a silver community supporter subscription. You'll notice some others have copper or gold usernames to reflect the level of their paid subscription as well. And those of use who don't subscribe are stuck with whatever color the forum style we're using gives us.

Ah - my apologies then to Rune

I think the color of his name is set by the ENWorld, not by him, for being a paid subscriber at the silver level.

This. It's also worth noting that a lot of us (especially a lot of us old-timers) use one of the dark-backed legacy skins, so this problem would likely be even worse if everyone could change the colors of their user names.
