This is a very, very weird setting book. This is a good thing.
The title is a little misleading. This isn't about Africa, but an Africa-like continent with many races of beings and many monsters and weird creatures. I would have liked a real African setting, but came to like this one a lot and want to play in it.
In Nyambe, there are three worlds, material, shadow and spirit. Very important are the orisha, the spirits that are always present. Nyambans worship Nyambe, also the name of their creator god they also call the Overpower. From the Overpower they get their magic as well.
The book has a full set of mythology and history, races and cultures. Five core classes are offered, variantions on the standard game ones. There are good prestige classes: Dembe (trackers), Engolo (monks), Inyaga Yensimbi (blacksmith), Leopard Cultist, Magic Easter (anti-wizards), Mask Maker, Mganga (witch doctor), Ngoma (magical drummer), Amazon, Soroka (take poison, tell the future), Zombi Cultist.
There's a whole chapter of feats and skills to match, plus equipment, magic items and monsters. Pretty much following the tradional PHB order.
It's a bog book (256 pages) but feels light for its size. Must be channeling the Overpower.
I would have liked to see the people be more, well, black. But this is a good book.
