Obligatory Unearthed Arcana thread

Why OGC pleases me

Here's why I, as a consumer, like the idea of UA being 99% OGC: Because it will get support.

What I have noticed among current D20 books is that a lot of times, the wheel is re-re-re-invented. Some of that has to do with timing, as two or more companies work on the same type of book and come up with different implementations of the same thing. In other cases, it has to do with a feeling that "I can do it better".

WotC's name carries a great deal of weight. Regardless of anyone's personal opinion, it seems like a "stamp of approval" for many campaigns. By releasing Unearthed Arcana as OGC, these "approved" rules are available for standardization in many products. There is still plenty of room for people to try to "do them better", and that is part of what the OGC philosophy is about.

I agree that I would like to see some WotC IP made OGC. The 3.5 SRD contains the kernels of Epic and Planar content. People complain that books like the BoVD did not use Epic Feats, and the DDG did not directly discuss Epic play. Now, such products, or enhanced successors, can do so. And so can 3rd party products.

Likewise, by making the "rules subsystem toolkit" that is Unearthed Arcana OGC, 3rd parties are free to use what they like in their products. Because they are "WotC approved", that will carry more weight with many campaigns, opening them to using products they would not have touched before.

I, too, would like to see more of the ELH, DDG, and MoP made OGC. But the pieces that are already in the revised SRD should give the 3rd parties plenty of room to expand on it. While we're at it, I should mention that I would prefer to see more commonly-used material like the vehicle rules (from Dragon and Arms & Equipment) make it to the SRD long before I will care about more ELH or DDG material.

There have been a few attempts to re-use OGC content, but they have been few (Green Ronin has been perhaps most involved in this area, along with Mongoose, as far my knowledge goes). More "WotC approved" OGC content may inspire more "OGC re-use" from all companies. And that's a good thing.

* I don't blame the "foot-dragging" on the poor guy who is responsible for getting the material ready to go into the SRD (is it still Andrew?). It seems more like WotC simply won't devote the time and effort on a corporate level into getting it done. That is, they must have the person doing the job doing a number of other things that take precedence (at least, that's my guess).

Still Andy Smith. He's mentioned a few months back that the drafts of the ELH and Dt&Dg were done, but were pending approval and that 3.5E was holding everything up.

I guess UA has also been holding everything up.

Cheers!

I am really looking forward to unearthed arcana (I won't allow paladins until that book is out... should have always been a Prc)

But what I am really looking forward to is alternate versions of character generation, spellcasting and the like.

This is probably going to be the last rulebook I buy from WotC, unless they surprise me... which it does not look like they are going to do any time soon. They might with the players guide to the planes.

Aaron.

Even though I'm not a publisher, I've got buds who are. ;)

Also, this benefits me as a fan, due to the support it'll get. It won't be free (so it won't see as wide support as the Core Rules), but it'll be there, it'll be "approved," and it'll be good for others who are looking to do the same or similar things.

I mean, how many mass combat systems does one DM really need? Or variant rangers? or HP systems? or Magic systems? Since there's very little cross-polination in the 3rd party world, the answer generally boils down to "well, how many companies are there? One for each of 'em."

This one book, compiling some of the best and the brightest of 3rd party publications, will markedly reduce the amount of duplicated material, due to the heads of those companies saying "Well, since more people saw Unearthed Arcana than saw most of my product line, it'd be in my best interests to go with that, unless there's a good reason to vary." Similarly, like people go with the SRD, unless there's a good reason to vary.

And less duplicated material means more page space devoted to new stuff, and/or fluff, which are basically the only two reasons to buy a supplement. :)

Publishing, smublishing. This means that 101 different companies will all be more likely to use 1 rule than 101 (or even 50) different ones, because of the unity of the fan base when it comes to WotC products. And THAT benefits me as a consumer!

I'm just glad I bought AU at 37% off, as I don't think I've
gotten enough inspiration out of it to rationalize the cover
price. Mostly I take races and some classes and port them
back into 3.5. I do like the setting, though. :)

Back on topic, I'm interested in this book, and very happy its
mostly OGC. Hooray for everyone! :D
