Mostly. ;)

I think it does need more than 2 hp, plus a combination of DR, SR, and other immunities to give it a fighting chance. Even a decent Con score and the Toughness feat would help, without raising the HD.

we can do most or all of that. ;) first of all, what HD should we start it at? 1-HD?

Hmmm...originally, it was a 1/2 foot square. That would make it Diminutive, so maybe 1 HD isn't that bad for starters. If we allow for decent Advancement, it would scale well.

What if:

1 HD: Diminutive
2-3 HD: Tiny
4-5 HD: Small
6-? HD: Medium

That would make a 5-foot square patch rather deadly, eh?

I like Shade's advancement outlines. And Toughness and/or a good Con would help too.

As for DR, there's a few options. Do we want to make it more supernatural (in which case it'd be x/magic)? Or should we go for a more naturalistic approach (moss should be difficult to bludgeon or stab to death, methinks). If we wanted to get really irritating, we could combine the two, for DR x/magic and slashing.

I'm thinking x should equal 5. This is still a pretty low-level encounter, after all.

I'm tempted to go with 5/-. I can't really see smashing, slashing, or poking it to be terribly effective. Scraping would seem the best option, but what type is that, really? Magic could also work, since it is a bit of a supernatural entity, but it would almost have to possess an "and" with some of the damage types to keep it effective.

5/- works. Makes sense, and you're right about "scraping damage". Alternatively, we could play up the supernatural and give it 5/magic and silver or 5/magic and cold iron. But that's getting away from the point a bit, methinks.

I'm trying to grasp the motives of an immobile moss of human intelligence...what does it desire? Does it feed on the memories to get a sense of what life is like for mobile races, to see the world beyond its limited grasp?

As to their origin, I'd imagine the first obliviaxes evolved from moss growing upon the graves of powerful spellcasters, or the fallen towers of besieged wizards.

I like both your motivation and origin for the obliviax. It eats memories to escape its own limited area of influence. If we wanted to emphasize this, we could give it something akin to the "inescapable craving" or "diet dependant" mechanic from Libris Mortis. Con damage for every week it hasn't eaten a memory? Or Int damage? When Int reaches 0, it becomes a normal patch of moss?

Demiurge out.

That would be interesting, and would play in well with their evil alignments...rob others of their existences to improve their own.
