Ogre Tree Hugger

I am messing around with creating a ogre character, but I want him to be protector of the forest. This is the draft background:

Relatively weak, but unusually compassionate, Mugihjia struggled to fit in as a young ogre. He was bullied by his peers, and as a result he developed a quickness (II) and watchfullness (Spot/Listen/Climb) that allowed to him to avoid trouble, or get out of it quickly. Often, he took off into the wilds. There he would spend his time looking for and watching the wild animals.

It was on one such trip that he ran accros a wounded bear. He thought that he could help it, but the bear thought otherwise and Mugihjia was severly wounded. Mugihja people called on the forest druid to help them. Now the Ogres and the druid were not the greatest of friends, but the ogres kept men from the forests, and that was a good thing as far as the druid was concerned. But he did have a price - the young ogre. Mugihjia had to join the druid once he was well enough to make the trip. For the Mugihjia's trips into the forest, and the story of how he had been wounded had reached the druids ears, and he knew that the young ogre was different.

So Mugihjai went to the druid, where lived and worked. Badger and Bear (not the bear, though the two did later cross paths) Treant and Mr Troll became his teachers and companions. He learnt the ways of the forest. He learnt to track. He learnt to heal. And he learnt to fight to protect it all.

OK. The question is this. Druid or ranger?

I was initially thinking Druid (it would be a bit more combat nerfed that way, and so not as intimidating for the DM to consider putting in the game). I do like the class, and the animal companion at 1st (badger I think). But the background seemed to suggest a ranger. If so, what you take as your favoured enemy - humans? And would you go TWF or Archer when it comes up?

Cheers.

Ogre rangers are vicious and most favor melee combat. So probably two weapon fighting, with a normal sized longsword and a normal size bastard sword in the other.

Ta Nightfall, missed your post as I was writing my last one. Ranger seems to be the favoured option at this point.

By normal do you (Med) or normal for the ogre (Large).

Sorry dog,

(Was agreeing with Otter.)

Medium longsword. Bastard sword is always large. And yes it is since druid is nice for wild shaping, I'd say getting ranger makes sense since it does a lot for the guy that already has good fort saves.

Yeah, the Ogiers or something. The treesinging and wood and stone working part would be interesting, but I'm a SRD player, so its not an option as far as I am aware. And I also like the "against type" nature of the character.

Which is why, despite the advantages of the TWF ranger I am still very tempted by the Druid.

Know Warcraft? Make him like Rexxar. Beastmaster. Wildshaping does not really make sense for him, Archer neither, so go the druid summoner route.

Not familiar with warcraft or Rexxar.

But yeah, the ability to summoning was one of the draws, as are the spells like Speak with Animals and Entangle (off the top of my head). It gives him the ability to be effective while actually avoiding combat.
