Ogremage

Depends for what you would want to use it. Theoretically it might be allowed to post a whole class here and criticize it. But as soon as someone copies it for his own use... it becomes dangerous. :D

even then...

The problem is this: it is one thing if someone said right off the bat, lets consider this progression for revision and whatnot, but he blatently said that he did not buy the book and was just looking for what the text held. Intent plays a factor.

Here is the problem - and it is a very common problem with regards to the law.

Fair Use restrictions were put into place for an intended type of use. The documentation of those intentions is rather extensive if you go search them out. We've stretched those uses far beyond the original intentions.

When you stretch a law, the people that originally created that law (or other people benefiting from it) tend to get upset and ask the law to be rewritten to prevent it from being so broadly interpreted. Being that these people were the ones that had the power to make sure the law was put in the books in the first place, they usually have the power to make the laws get altered. As a result, the law becomes more restrictive and more complex. This creates more litigation and makes lawyers happy.

I strongly urge anyone that claims use of 'fair use' laws to do some research on them before using them. There is a high cost for everyone is they are abused.

So it sounds like you agree that the courts support posting a snippet of a class here, and that the law would need to be re-written to prohibit that. I can agree with that analysis.

I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with your analysis. I am not providing any opinion regarding the analysis. I am just encouraging people to try to understand Fair Use provisions before trying to use them. Knowing why the Fair Use provisions are there is as important as knowing the words in the provisions.

I will note that some rulings on Fair Use have been very restrictive, specifically regarding what falls in the specified categories of use.

Ogre Mages would be another "low HD but high ECL" race, wouldn't they?

Ogre Mages are so different from the normal ogres because they're really Japanese Oni, and an Oni is a very different beast from the slobbering hulk that an Ogre is. The Pen and the Sword are both in that thing's blood.

Ogre Mage, Sorc 4, Spellsword on up. Nice, but you're 16th level before you actually start channeling spells, which is the awesome part. Is there another good race setup for Spellsword?

If you're going to start mixing sorcerer levels and ogre mages, I suggest doing a rewrite of the ogre mage. I rewrote them to remove their spell-like abilities, but gave them sorcerer spellcasting ability (effective 10 levels) including the spells found in their spell-like abilities. I bumped up their CR to 10 and their LA to +8.

So far, it has worked very well. My ogre mage sorcerer 10 is a fine CR 20 creature while a normal ogre mage sorcerer 10 would be a pathetic foe for a 20th level party.
