Ogremage

If you're going to start mixing sorcerer levels and ogre mages, I suggest doing a rewrite of the ogre mage. I rewrote them to remove their spell-like abilities, but gave them sorcerer spellcasting ability (effective 10 levels) including the spells found in their spell-like abilities. I bumped up their CR to 10 and their LA to +8.

So far, it has worked very well. My ogre mage sorcerer 10 is a fine CR 20 creature while a normal ogre mage sorcerer 10 would be a pathetic foe for a 20th level party.

Awesome. So it's a 10th level sorc with combat prowess at level 15. Could you go straight to Spellsword with that? Or would you rule that you need a level in an -actual- class to get the +1 existing class thing to work?

Personally, I'd allow it ... sort of. I only use this type of thing for NPCs because I believe that the Savage Species progressions (and, in general, using creatures with high ECLs as PCs) leads to huge problems. A high LA is just a way of saying 'This creatures offensive abilities are too strong, so we'll give it low hit points to make up for it. That way it will be too powerful while it is alive, but it will die a lot.'
