D&D 5E Ok all, I just cannot wrap my head around how combat works. Please Help.

Hmm. I wouldn't be so quick to categorise, if I were you! A significant section of the MMO community loves nothing more than to tear apart the math behind a game's systems and eke every advantage out of it that they can. In many ways, they're trying to have the best of both worlds: the closed systems of an MMO, and the pliability of an TRPG.
I never said MMO players are all content with prefab options. I only said that tabletop players generally are not.

There are a million reasons you might choose to play MMOs, and only a few to choose tabletop games. It's reasonable to say that anyone who does play tabletop puts a high priority on one of those few things. That doesn't mean MMO players don't put a high priority on those things--it doesn't say anything about MMO players at all.

If we're doing anecdotes about what people want out of the system, of the tabletop players I know, only one of them pores through rulebooks looking at crunch, and he's not even playing tabletop RPGs any more. My current players rarely pick up the PHB; some of them never, and even when they do, it's to look up a spell, or a rule, rather than try to reverse engineer the stats behind the character. Of past players I've games with, I'd say it's largely true of them as well.

I'm not saying my experience is typical - maybe it is, maybe it isn't - but we all have our perceptions coloured by our own experience - it's a human thing to think that our experience is more universal than it is. My point is that we need to be careful when we claim what players* want from the game.

*or prospective players that Wizards want to hook

If you are having problems with figuring out all the places to look for character creation, go to zerohitpoints.com and click on the D&D 5: Character Creation Checklist. I have a downloaded pdf of that but I can't seem to find the link to it on that page anywhere. Won't matter if you have internet access when you create a PC.

Painted_klown,

The kind of practical, how-to advice you need to be a D&D DM can be found at Angry DM's website: http://angrydm.com/

In the top right corner, you'll see a small section of links titled, "How to Run a Game." Angry DM's writing style takes a little getting used to, but the advice he gives is rock solid. He uses practical advice to teach you how to run a good D&D game. It may be a lot to absorb all at once and you don't need to use all of it in play right away. But if you do continue to be a DM, make it a point to absorb and apply what he's showing you in those articles.

Good luck!

That is a LOT of words on his blog! But it seems solid, yeah.
