I vote scout, hunter/tracker, and explorer and trailblazer. Walker might be a modern ranger, but I'm not sure. I was tempted to vote archer, but decided that not every ranger is an archer.

Thanx for the poll, Kahuna.

maybe I phrased the option badly, but it worth noting that morevotes have been cast for the joke answer than the favored enemy archetype...

By joke answer you mean TWF, right? :D I know you mean Walker, but TWF also got fewer votes.

The only problem with the poll is, that although it captures the archetypes well, I think most folks have too much wrapped up into how such archetypes are to be developed?

Also, what's the difference between a scout and a hunter, for instance? I don't know for sure.

So did I.

Both Monte's ranger (I prefer the BoHM version) and AEG's mercenary ranger have come up already, but I'll also toss in a vote for those being more interesting than the PHB ranger.

AEG's MERCENARIES book does the ranger justice in several core classes: Guerilla (stealth fighter), Hunter (bounty hunter or survivalist), Mercenary Ranger and Scout (ranged sneak attack!). They are all good and all focused on different areas. I played an AEG mercenary ranger last week (first time I EVER played a ranger of any type for the first time) and the class kicked ass. Definitely plenty of reasons to go up in it past level 1. You can recreate the PHB style ranger with it as well (entirely at player's option), or do pretty much whatever you think a ranger should be able to do with it. It's that flexible!

And that's what the D&D Ranger should be, as well!

I vote "Everything except Archer/TWF, and with the option to become those, if the player wants to."

So WHY are they more interesting? It's Special Abilities, isn't it?

(I thought most of the Bloodhound Prestige Class' Special Abilities would have been good for the Ranger, when I saw it in Masters of the Wild.)

Okay, putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak.

Being completely unsatisfied with everything I've seen so far in alt.Rangers, I finally made my own. It should give people a good idea about what I see as being important to the Ranger archetype.

I've posted it in the House Rules forum for review on balance (I _don't_ want an uber-class), but I thought everyone here might be interested in it.

It should be noted that as I looked at what I wanted in a Ranger, it became apparent to me that many of the Barbarian's abilities fit into my concept. Fast movement, especially. Uncanny dodge also seemed a great way to represent the Ranger's awareness to his environment. Because UD is rather weak at higher levels (we rarely spring traps in our game) and because the Ranger should be able to endure some environmental hardships, I thought DR would be appropriate, too.

More votes for Walker from Texas than a two-weapon wielder? Ok, let's see about the abilities... at 1st level: True Name: Walker, 2nd level: Karate kick, 3rd Level: Car companion - Pick-up truck, 20th level: Ab-swinger shopping channel deal. Sounds good! ;)

I voted everything save 2WF, obsessed opponent of a few races, and some Texas dude named Walker. (And everyone known that Walker is the Texas Danger, not the Texas Ranger.)
