Old West Cthulhu

synecdoche

First Post
I was referred to this forum from another enworld board. What I am looking for is any information or resources that anyone has come up with for setting a Call of Cthulhu campaign in the mythic Old West.

Obviously I would draw heavily on the 1890s rules, but I was wondering if anyone had done such a campaign before and, if so, what their experience was.

I have found a couple of plots online that sound interesting, and a link to an article that was expressly about this topic but unfortunately the link was dead.

Any help would be great. I was planning on using Call of Cthulhu rules rather than d20 but since I am at this stage looking more for ideas and such, anything would be great.

Thanks,
Dave

Are you looking for Cthulhu in the Old West material, or are you looking to run a cthulhu style old west game (i.e horror, insanity, dark magic, etc.)? We have played several home-brew old west horror games using the d20 cthulhu rules, but they had nothing to do with the Mythos.

Uhm, a little from column A, a little from column B. Many of the adventures will have nothing to do with the mythos, but others will. One adventure might bring the characters face to face with a shoggoth or something, while the next one might deal with bandits or cattle rustlers.

I wasn't planning on using the d20 rules, but the original Chaosium rules.

If you were going the d20 route, I'd suggest picking up a copy of d20 Sidewinder: Wild West Adventure from Citizen Games and using it with d20 Call of Cthulhu. A copy of GURPS Old West would also be a good purchase for Western background material if you are playing traditional BRP CoC however. I've also heard the "Knuckleduster" RPG books are very good, but I don't own those so I can't comment.

Also, see if you can find this paperback collection:

The Horror in the Museum and Other Revisions by H.P. Lovecraft and Others. ISBN 0-7867-0387-3

Basically, this is a collection of short stories that Lovecraft reworked for some younger writers that he took under his wing. Two stories by Zealia Bishop, "The Curse of Yig" and "The Mound", relate the Great Old One Yig to the significance of snakes in American Indian culture in the Southwest (and all of the original cultures of North, Central and South America). This might make for a good starting point in an Old West campaign.

Anyhow, hope this helps. :)

That is an excellent suggestion. :)
