OMG, Tasha's Laughter is crazy good.

Yep, the only areas were Hold Person is better, is range and the option to CdG.

All in all, Tasha's is the superior spell (and with one spell level lower for arcane casters, even more so) IMHO.

A dragon used this on my fighter once... I spent the entire encounter laughing my head off while the rest of the party fought.

That was fun and dignified!

Tasha's is a good spell, but you're overlooking a few things.

1.) Animals and magical beasts are immune due to their intelligence. Constructs, oozes, plants, undead and vermin are immune to mind affecting magic. 7 of 15 types are immune.
Not all magical beasts are stupid. You're thinking about 3.0 Beasts, which mostly got rolled in with the magical beasts in 3.5e (though some, like the dinos, became Animals instead).

This is a good reason for BBEGs to try and get something (special ability or magic item) that allows them to re-roll a save once per day. It comes in really handy when a 1 really screws you over.

I'm of the opinion that if the BBEG rolls a 1, then it's too bad for him.

It's no fun if the PCs try something out on the BBEG and have almost no chance to affect him, and by luck it does, but the BBEG negates that by re-rolling. (Unless it's a class ability, like a cleric having the Luck domain.)

Just my opinion. ;)

What if an NPC rolls 27* on the random NPC personality chart in the DMG? Are they still affected by Tasha's Laughter?

Yeah, cause most evil overlords are a laugh a minute :D

In my experience, this only occurs when the fiendish overlord has the PCs trapped in a fiendishly complex trap and has just finished describing his Cunning Plot of World Domination (tm) prior to leaving said PCs in the hands of his inept and easily overpowered hench-creatures.

Wow, I just made a Bard and had taken "Lesser Confusion" as a spell. Ha! I guess that is in there just as a trick for the unwary. THL is a no-brainder compared to that flotsom.
